WE DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT ALONE
Bishop Mathes and Diocesan Banner
Wildfires rage. The stock market tumbles. It rains too much in some places, but the southwest remains in a persistent drought. Reporters in Virginia are gunned down, but we cannot have a sensible conversation about gun violence. So much for a quiet August!

And in the midst of this, we are called to be spiritual leaders in our land. If I am convinced of anything, it is this: we cannot do this work alone. I am also aware that so much of the way we "do church" conspires to make us alone. We are in our separate parishes. We craft sermons and lessons in the solitude of our studies. Even our pastoral contacts put us in possession of heavy information that we cannot share.

Maybe this is why, I find myself so eager to be with you at our annual clergy conference. Speaking for myself, I need to be with you. I need to be vulnerable in the safety of our shared ministry, where we can say to one another what we celebrate and what burdens us. We do not have to do this ministry alone, and this is one point where we can come together and be there for each other.

If you have not registered for Clergy Conference, October 5-7, please do so online here. If there is any assistance that you need in being fully present, please let me know. I hope to see you soon. In the meantime, you are very much in my prayers.

Faithfully,

The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes
Bishop
