It was great to see some of you at Episcopal Night at the Padres! Thank you for supporting the event and for your sock donations. You all are great!

Now that baseball is back from its all-star break, I hope all of you All-Stars have had, or are planning to have, a break of your own. I had a wonderful trip to the Holy Land in June that was highly impactful if not relaxing. It is important to schedule some time off.

This newsletter is full of good information. I hope you will take the time to read it.

Thank you for all you do,
Canon Julie Young

Treasurer's Tip of the Month
Hiring a New Employee? Be sure that you provide him/her with an offer letter that states that they are at-will. Make their employment offer contingent on a background check and completion of Safeguarding God's People within the first 60 days.

Visit the diocesan website for the Lay Employee Letter of Agreement Template. A job description should be attached to the letter. A sample job description is on the same website page.

Cash Flow

Help Cash Flow by Changing Pension Billings to Monthly Summers are often a difficult time for a church's cash flow. One way that you can make a positive difference is to ask the Church Pension Group to change your billing from quarterly to monthly. Since quarterly payments are made in advance, switching to monthly will smooth your cash flow and make payments more closely align with the actual period in which the pension is earned. To make this change, contact Church Pension Group Client Services: benefits@cpg.org.

Top Reasons Churches Get Sued
We never like to think about this but it is interesting to note that the top reasons churches are sued are #1 - Sexual Abuse of a Minor and # 2 Personal Injury (Church Law & Tax, June 23, 2015). The good news is that there are ways to mitigate these risks. First, be sure all your staff and volunteers take Safeguarding God's People that are required to do so. It is now online, so it is convenient - and free. Second, The Rev. Tom Wilson conducts safety inspections of all churches who are insured with Church Insurance Agency. One of the key findings are trip and fall hazards and loose railings. If your report indicates you have either, please address them!

Disaster Planning
The diocese is in the early stages of an initiative to develop a disaster program for the diocese. Our goal is for each church
to have a plan so we can all have the vital information needed in case of an emergency. We are excited to share with you a resource we learned of at the last CPG Benefits Conference in May: www.circumspex.com, which is a web based resilience and emergency response planner. We have started the process of entering information needed for the Episcopal Church Center in Ocean Beach and realize how helpful it will be to have this information available online. Each church can have its own account and each account will be confidential between the church and the diocese; no other church will be able to see the data you enter. We encourage all the churches to understand the importance of this project and take part in this process to ensure you have all the information needed in the palm of your hands if the unexpected occurs. The Circumspex people are willing to meet with us to explain the process or answer any questions that may arise. Please contact Diana Rubi, 619-481-5458 to get your church started on the Circumspex website. Please feel free to visit the site www.circuspex.com  to learn more about this program and/or see this video to help you understand the features https://www.circumspex.com/Site/resources/video-library/.

Another disaster planning resource to consider is the Episcopal Asset Map. The video below explains how it works:

Grant Requests
With Convention in November this year, the budget process for the diocese starts earlier. We have sent grant requests to most churches that are eligible to receive operating and property assistance. If you have not received one and think you are eligible, please contact Canon Julie Young

Program & Ministry Grant Requests
The grant request template for program and ministry grants is available on the diocesan website. If you have any questions please contact Canon Julie Young

All grant requests are due September 1, 2015

Wellness Tip of the Month
Challenge Yourself: Don't Watch TV While You Eat
Fact: People who eat while watching the tube tend to consume more calories.
Reason: That is because you are less likely to concentrate on the food while enjoying the show and are more likely to overeat.
Challenge: Try not eating in front of the TV.
