We did not publish a Finance & Admin News last month - between a Church Pension Group benefits administration conference, Leadership Academy, and the diocesan audit, there simply was no time. Thankfully our audit is nearing completion. And I received lots of good information at the conference to share with you over the next few months.

Welcome to those of you who are receiving this newsletter for the first time; we have added the names give to me at Leadership Academy. It was great to see so many of you there. Powerpoints and videos of the workshops are on the diocesan website

We will see some of you in the next few months as we start to focus on congregational audits!

My best to all of you,

Canon Julie Young

Minimum Wage Change
The minimum wage for hourly employees is increasing from $9 to $10 per hour on January 1, 2016. The minimum annual salary (regardless of the number of hours worked) for exempt employees is increasing to $41,600 at the same time. All non-exempt employees should be paid on an hourly, and not salaried, basis. Something to think about as you begin budgeting for next year!

Property Use Manual Now Available

Our property committee has put together a property usage manual that will help you in your risk management and revenue producing efforts related to your building. It can be found here: www.edsd.org/buildings.

Stewardship Support

Our Diocese is a member of The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS). This allows all congregations to access the member resources on the TENS website: www.tens.org. Our updated username is "living" and the password is "generously." TENS resources include materials for teaching discipleship, generosity and environmental stewardship, suggestions for annual pledge campaigns, capital campaign guidance, liturgical and worship materials, and other aids to year-round messaging.

Audit Notifications Due
In February, all congregations were sent a notebook with instructions to follow in conducting their 2013 audits. On page 9 of that notebook, there is a form that was due April 15 informing the diocese of names of your audit committee and the type of audit being conducted for 2013. Page 5 of the notebook provides guidelines regarding the type of audit that is required of congregations based primarily on size of revenue. Please save us a phone call and send the form in now! If you have any questions, please contact Rosa Feeney, 619-481-5457.

California Sick Time
The California paid sick time requirements are changing July 1. Most essential is the requirement that all employees who work more than 30 days in a year are required to have at least three paid sick days. Also, all employees must receive an accounting of their sick time balance with their pay check. A sick time poster must be posted and employees should be given a Wage and Employment Notice (Labor Code section 2810.5). A checklist of requirements is available on the diocesan website

All workplaces are required to post additional California and Federal employment law postings. Since laws change frequently, it is necessary to change postings each year. The California Chamber of Commerce publishes an all-in-one poster that is a convenient way to assure compliance with the law. These are available here: http://www.calchamber.com/store/products/Pages/California-Employment-Poster.aspx. The diocese is a member of the California Chamber of Commerce so preferred rates are available if you order in our name. Plus, we have an extra poster that we will give you for free if you are the first one to call Canon Young and request it: 619-481-5453.

Wellness Tip of the Month
Get up from your desk every hour and walk for two minutes! According to a recent study from the University of Utah School of Medicine, people who got up and moved around for at least two minutes every hour had a 33% lower risk of dying. Learn more.
