Workshop Descriptions

Perspectives on Young Adult Ministry with Hazelruth Adams, Amy LajinessMaria Mahaffey, Fiona McNeil, and Sam Meyer
(Session 1: 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)
Who are we? How do we envision our church community? How can we be the church authentically? Come and hear stories, experiences, and dreams from a panel of young adults, and learn about their vision for young adult ministry in the Diocese of San Diego.

Latino Reunion: Energizing Intercultural Dialogue with Martha Rodriguez and Rom Ituarte
(Session 1: 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)
How can we bring together our cultures in worship, fellowship and service? As part of the diocesan Latino Leadership project, about 35 people who identify with Latino culture were taught community organizing skills for raising Latino leaders in their congregations and communities. A workshop at the diocesan annual convention surfaced issues of primary concern to Latinos, namely, the importance of culture and language but primarily culture. This workshop will be a reunion for those 35 people and will explore ways Latinoa culture can reveal itself in our churches. Bishop Mathes will introduce new liturgies for use in the diocese: Quinceanẽra and First Communion. These liturgies are believed to be important to Latinoa culture and historically have not been part of the Anglican services. Bishop Mathes will unveil these liturgies at this workshop which will then be available for use throughout the diocese.

Exploring MultiCultural Liturgical Practices in Our Midst with Michael Reichle
(Session 2: 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.)
The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego is blessed with many languages and cultures. How do we provide spiritual nourishment in a meaningful way to each culture? In this workshop we will discuss some of the liturgical multicultural practices in the diocese, through the lens of interaction between Anglo and Hispanic cultures, as the two largest cultural groups. How and when do we worship as a community? How do we try to make blended liturgies meaningful to all cultures present? When and how to we bring the various cultures together? What works? What doesn't?

Social Media and Young People with Becky Gleason
(Session 3: 1:45 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
Social media has played an increasingly large role in American society over the last two decades. While people of all ages have experienced this shift, it has especially impacted those growing up in the 21st century. Children and youth in the U.S. have never known life without internet and computers. What does this mean for the way they relate to social media? How can we continue to help teens navigate faith, school, and relationships in a virtual world that can at times seem foreign?
