Workshop Descriptions

Vestry and Wardens 101 (Session 1: 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)
Bishop Mathes will cover basic responsibilities and obligations of wardens, vestry or bishop's committee members. Comments will be framed under the traditional duties of trusteeship: loyalty to the church, care as fiduciary, and obedience to canons and civil law. Canon Young will cover other responsibilities of vestries including financial, administrative and risk management issues of which all persons in church leadership should be aware.

Audit Workshop with Rosa Feeney
(Session 1: 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.)
Annual audits are required annually by all congregations. The diocesan audit guidelines will be discussed. In addition, we will review the internal audit process step-by-step.

Finance & Human Resource Management
(Session 2: 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m.)
During this workshop, Canon Young will go deeper into church financial and human resource management. We will include such topics as how to read a financial statement, and key risk management items. This workshop will also review and explain the basics of such areas as employee vs independent contractor, exempt, non-exempt and volunteer status, and other critical areas. This workshop is designed for treasurers, rectors, parish administrators, finance committee, and vestry members.

How to Make Your Property Work for You
(Session 3: 1:45 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
Your property provides your community space to worship and learn. It also provides a base for outreach. More and more, church properties are being used to generate much needed income to support the core work of the congregation. However, for it to care and feed your congregation in this way, you need to provide for its care and feeding by maintaining it. This workshop will cover property usage agreements, insurance and addressing maintenance issues. Our new diocesan property usage handbook will be unveiled!

Preschools - Mission and Marketing (Session 3: 1:45 p.m. - 3 p.m.)
What is the mission of the parish preschool in our current culture? How do preschools thrive in the changing environment with the public school system moving into the preschool business? We are excited to have Jenny Smith lead this workshop. Jenny runs a highly successful preschool that is mission-driven and seems immune to the inroads of the public school system. We strongly encourage preschool directors, advisory boards and rectors of churches with preschools to attend.

Presenter Biographies

Ms. Rosa Feeney holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in Taxation from the Cal State East Bay, San Francisco. She is a CPA and fluent in Spanish. Rosa has worked at KPMG and other, smaller public accounting firms. Rosa joined the accounting department at the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego in 2009. She helps congregations comply with the financial requirements of the church canons. She also assists congregations in their compliance with parochial reports. Rosa's love is the balance sheet. She and her husband live in Bonita.

The Bishop The Rt. Rev. James R. Mathes brings to the diocese an uncommon mix of pastoral ministry and nonprofit administration experience. He was elected to serve as the fourth bishop of our diocese in November 2004 and consecrated in March 2005. During his seven years as a parish priest, church attendance doubled, school participation tripled and the congregation founded a community outreach program for the elderly and disabled. In 2001, Bishop Mathes was named canon to the ordinary for the Diocese of Chicago, where he directed the Department of Deployment and Congregational Development. He secured a $1.6 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to establish a clergy mentoring program. He also helped guide 130 congregations through a strategic planning process.

Ms. Jenny Smith has been the director of All Saints' Preschool since 2001. She entered into a student population of 14 and grew the school by over 300% in a little over a year. At that time she was ready for yet another challenge and decided to open a second All Saints' Preschool. The preschool now receives nearly $1 million per year in tuition revenue. She runs the school on biblical principles that assist greatly in facing and handling the challenges it brings. Jenny has a strong record in maximizing revenue growth, driving profitability and strengthening relationships in an often diverse environment. It is her passion to serve the Lord daily through the young families at the preschool. Jenny was baptized at St. James, La Jolla at six weeks of age. She is happily married to James Smith who is the creator of her very heavily visited website: www.allsaintspreschool.org. She and her husband have led their weekly Bible study for the past nine years.

Canon Julie Young came to the diocese in 2009 and since then has been responsible for diocesan finance, accounting, human resources, and administration. She also consults congregations on these subjects. Prior to working for the diocese, Julie was employed at City Heights Community Development Corporation as the associate director. She previously had been the chief operating officer for Good News Partners, a Chicago faith-based organization that provides housing and support services to those who would otherwise be homeless. Canon Young has an MBA in Finance from the University of California, Berkeley.
