Beyond Our Diocese
General Convention 2015
Plans have been underway for over one year to ensure the 78th General Convention of The Episcopal Church is as paperless as possible. In this "Convention of Screens," much of the legislative work will be displayed electronically on tablets or on projection screens in the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. To that end, each registered deputy and bishop along with the first clergy alternate/first lay alternate will be provided an iPad for their use during General Convention. The iPads will have access to the Virtual Binder, an application that replicates electronically most of what previously had been provided in the physical binders that have been part of General Convention. The iPads will also contain reference materials such as Constitutions and Canons, the Journal, and The Blue Book, as well as other materials supportive of the legislation processes of General Convention. The Episcopal Church's 78th General Convention, June 25 - July 3, will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. Mentor a Military Child with Operation Bigs!
Operation Bigs, a program of Big Brothers Big Sisters, is a one-to-one mentoring program for military children, which provides an extra layer of support to local military families. These children may have a parent who is deployed, recently moved to San Diego, or transitioning into a new school. We also serve children of the fallen. Volunteers meet with their Little Brother/Little Sister for at least one hour each week. During their time together, the "Big" and "Little" play games, sports, and do other fun activities together, while building a friendship. Operation Bigs serves military children throughout San Diego County and the need for caring, committed mentors to support the children of those who defend our country remains urgent. We are currently recruiting civilian, retired, veteran and active military adult volunteers - come join them! It's a great way to make a difference in a military family's while having fun! Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and able to commit to the program for one calendar year. For more information, contact the Operation Bigs Hotline: 858-746-9169, MilviC@SDBigs.org.

Congregational Development
Beginning in June, clergy and lay leaders are invited to team together for five colloquia focusing on Anglican Spirituality; the history of Anglicanism; and Anglican Mission and Ministry grounded in the theology of Incarnation. Colloquia include morning prayer, Eucharist, and evening prayer at the Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin, Nashotah House. Parish-based ministry practicum immediately follow each colloquium. Participants receive specific, collaborative assignments attached to each colloquium. Readings and assignments are tailored to specific ministries after the first year. Ongoing learning and sharing takes place within community by means of an online learning platform, video conferencing and coaching relationships through the submission of practicum assignments; social networking; and monthly cohort meetings with Institute coaches.
