Diocesan Convention
2015 in Chula Vista 
Our next diocesan convention will be Friday, February 13 and Saturday, February 14 at St. John's, 760 First Ave., Chula Vista. This year Bishop Mathes will ordain three deacons during the festive Eucharist on Saturday morning. All are welcome to participate. 

Please note: The deadline for registration is January 23. The late registration fee is $75 for convention and $75 for dinner. Please register today!

Resolutions
Submit a resolution to be considered by the convention. Forms and information are available on the diocesan website

Convention Materials 
All materials for the Convention booklet need to be submitted to Bobbi Hoff by January 9. No late materials will be added. 

Keynote Speaker
The Rt. Rev. Sean Rowe, bishop of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Bethlehem, and member of Task Force for Re-Imagining the Episcopal Church (TREC), will give the keynote address on Friday evening. 

Diaper Drive
All attendees are requested to bring diapers for the diocesan-wide diaper drive. Donations will help struggling families at Episcopal Community Services and the Episcopal Refugee Network. 

Ordinations
Three nominees will be ordained to the vocational diaconate during the Eucharist on Saturday at St. John's. All are welcome!

Diocesan-Wide Choir
All singers are welcome to participate in the diocesan-wide choir on Saturday. Contact Canon Martin Green to RSVP and for rehearsal information.

Ministry Displays
Ministries are welcome to display on outdoor tables at St. John's. For more information, visit the diocesan website

Fearless Love Grants Awarded      

We are happy to announce that the Fearless Love grants have been awarded. Thank you to everyone who submitted an application. The committee had a difficult time deciding because there are so many worthwhile ministries and ideas. The Rev. Martha Anderson wrote a summarizing article that details which funds went to whom. Capital Campaign       BSC

Gifts are still rolling in to the Build the Serving Church capital campaign. We will announce the final number at Diocesan Convention. It's not too late to be one of the contributors to this successful effort to: provide clergy mentorships, provide loans and grants to congregations, renovate the Episcopal Church Center, and strengthen the Bishop's Appeal. Anglican-Roman Catholic Day of Dialogue    

All are welcome to attend the annual Anglican-Roman Catholic Day of Dialogue on Saturday, January 24 at the Roman Catholic Pastoral Center, 3888 Paducah Dr., San Diego. Latino Leadership Training

In partnership with San Diego State's Consensus Organizing Center, the diocese is working to raise up Latino/Hispanic leaders for the church. This training will equip our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters to lead others in ministry and beyond. Vestry Training

On Saturday, January 31, a training will take place for vestry and bishop's committee members at St. Thomas of Canterbury, 44651 Avenida de Missiones, Temecula, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Bishop Mathes, Canon to the Ordinary Allisyn Thomas and Canon for Administration and Finance Julie Young will present the basics for steering an Episcopal congregation. $10, lunch included. Leading Change

The Rev. Frank Munoz, MA, MDiv, will lead a series of three classes about embracing the future and leading change in the 21st century. All classes will take place on Wednesdays, 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the diocesan School for Ministry, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd., San Diego. February 25, March 4 and March 11. $15 for all three classes. Register

Water to Wine Annual Gala
Episcopal Community Services' annual spring gala, Water to Wine, will take place on Saturday, April 25 at the McMillin Center in Liberty Station. "A Salute to Service," this event will honor our region's long military tradition as well as ECS' 90-year history. Enjoy cocktails, dinner, silent and live auctions and live musical entertainment. Expect a few surprises as well! $150 per person. Business sponsorships and/or auction donations are much appreciated and contribute greatly to the event's success. Preaching Conference

The Episcopal Preaching Foundation invites all to attend a preaching conference, March 5-7 at the Cathedral Center in Los Angeles. The conference is for all who are interested in preaching more effectively - in Spanish and English - native speakers and those just learning, seminarians, clergy and laity. In a mix of worship and celebration, plenary sessions and preaching groups, we will learn and grow together as we study and proclaim Jesus. Featured speakers: Justo Gonzalez, Simón Bautista, Arturo Bañuelas. Convention, Canyons & Community

Youth ages 13-18 are invited to attend a summer adventure in faith that will include volunteering at the Episcopal Church's General Convention in Salt Lake City, a local day of service, and a visit to Zion National Park, June 23-27. Total cost including transportation, food, accommodations, and travel insurance is $400 per participant. Monthly planning meetings begin in February -- please reserve your spot by February 8. January 17 Youth Collaborative

All youth leaders/volunteers/representatives are invited to attend the first official meeting of a new diocesan youth collaborative! The purpose of the meeting is to build collaborative efforts to serve youth in the Diocese of San Diego, including planning for summer youth mission trips, retreats and youth participation at Convention, which is Feb. 13-14. The Rev. Jason Samuel is the new priest-in-charge at St. David's, San Diego. He and his partner, Joe Doyle, moved to San Diego from St. Louis, Missouri, not Milwaukee, which we erroneously reported in last month's Diocesan News. Our sincere apologies. 


The Rev. Wes Hills is the new supply priest at Sts. Peter and Paul, El Centro. Formerly the rector of St. Andrew's, Encinitas, Wes and his wife, Terri, have enjoyed a couple of years of retirement and are happy to be back in ministry.

Statement Regarding Attack on Charlie Hebdo

Bishop Pierre Whalon of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe, has issued this statement concerning the January 7 terrorist attack on satirical Charlie Hebdo in Paris. 

 

Creator God, you sent your Son Jesus into the world that we might enjoy your peace always. Give us the strength to live as your children and be makers of peace and unity. Grant that all peoples might put aside their differences, and seek the unity of your Kingdom. We make this prayer to you in Jesus' name. Amen.
