Julie Young

After a renewing vacation in Pagosa Springs, Colorado followed  by an inspiring three-day Richard Rohr symposium, I hit the deck running on my return meeting with committees and our executive council. I am awed by the depth of talent and commitment that exists in our diocese. Thank you all!

Budgeting for next year is one of my big priorities and I suspect it is yours as well. We just received the plan selections for health insurance for next year. Executive Council will approve the selections and we will distribute the plans and rates in the November edition of this newsletter. In the meantime, you can budget a 7.2% increase for health insurance and 3.2% increase for basic dental insurance. These increases are less than last year's!

I also want to draw your attention to the stewardship offerings below. I know you are all hard at work on your stewardship campaigns and these resources may be useful in your efforts.

Health and Peace,

Canon Julie Young

Stewardship Workshop
Saturday, September 27, 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
St. Margaret's, Palm Desert will host a stewardship workshop  for the congregations of Mission Area Six. Contact St. Margaret's for more information: 760-346-2697.

Stewardship in the New Milennium
Demographic and social changes affect giving to religious institutions nationwide. This webinar walks you through  these changes and shows you how to apply this knowledge for stronger, more effective stewardship programs. View Webinar.

Stewardship Resources
The September issue of Vestry Papers focuses on whole-hearted stewardship. It explores the question, "What keeps us from living into fundraising as a wholehearted ministry?" When you think of  stewardship, do you think of giving or sharing? To some, giving suggests a transaction, a handing off, while sharing implies relationship, a connection. God invites us into relationship and encourages us to open our eyes and see what God is showing, telling and teaching us. Stories include:
Each article includes practical applications that you might try at a vestry meeting.

Audits Past Due
We appreciate those churches that have already sent in their 2013 audits. The deadline was September 1. We have received a number of audits and have heard from most of the rest of you that they will be completed soon. Thank you. For more information, contact Rosa Feeney.

Congregational and Ministry Support
The deadline for congregational support requests has been extended from September 30 to October 15. Those of you who have historically received program and outreach grants should have received the program and ministry grant request email this week; those requests are due October 18.

The Episcopal Network for Stewardship
Our diocese is a member of The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (TENS). All congregations may access the member resources on the web: www.tens.org.Username: giving. Password: glory. Resources include curricula for discipleship, generosity, environmental stewardship, annual pledge campaigns, capital campaign guidance, liturgical and worship materials and other aids to year-round giving.

Mission Share Pledges
Bishop Mathes will mail you a letter soon with the mission share pledge form. While it is challenging to submit your pledge prior to the completion of the budget process, we once again ask you to step out in faith and send in your pledge by the November 15 deadline.

Electronic Giving
Abundant evidence shows that churches receive more gifts and more stable cash flow if they allow parishioners to give electronically. While the diocese does not endorse any one vendor, we can suggest a few good places to start. ServiceU, PayPal, Stripe.

Safeguarding God's People
Safeguarding God's People (SGP) is now online! Take the modules in the comfort of your own home. As part of the new SGP, there is an updated chart of who should take it. Remember that certification must be renewed every five years. Background checks are a critical component of SGP. Updated guidelines are available online.
