Julie Young

This is my last week in the office before Labor Day. I am taking vacation and am back in the office Wednesday, September 3 - ready to move into our busy fall with 2015 budget planning and reigniting committees. I imagine that you too will hit the deck running for the start of a new program year, Sunday school, and stewardship planning.

This month's newsletter includes resources to help you with stewardship campaign planning. I hope you and your congregation will take advantage of the information that is available to maximize the possibility of a vibrant and successful campaign. The Episcopal Church Foundation, The Episcopal Network for Stewardship  and the diocesan stewardship Faithful Giving committee have resources to help you. See article below.

Lastly, please join me in welcoming our new accounting and administrative assistant, Diana Rubi. She is in charge of accounts payable and receivable; she is great!

Hope your summer has been delightful!

Health and Peace,

Canon Julie Young

SECFtewardship: Recruit Dream Team Now
From the Episcopal Church Foundation

True Story:
The week school let out for summer, I received four invitations to lunch and knew it was time to recruit next year's stewardship team. Each of those invitations represented a networking or volunteer request. Don't lose your best volunteers by waiting too late to invite them to join in. Use the tips below to recruit your stewardship Dream Team now.

Try this: Avoid the temptation to raid the finance committee or vestry for your stewardship team. Instead, list the skills you need: organization, communication, theological grounding, hospitality and creativity. Then invite people with those skills to lunch and recruit like this:

List your needs; list their talents: For example, "We're building a team to make this year's fall stewardship drive creative and fun. We want to emphasize St. James' importance in people's lives and you are such a great storyteller."

Then listen: Ask what interests them. Be prepared to adapt your plan to their passions. You'll be glad you did. Check out this ECF Vital Practices article for a story on when a parishoner's call doesn't meet the volunteer opening.

Be like Uncle Sam: Nothing builds commitment and loyalty in a volunteer like saying, "I want you." Close the conversation by saying, "You could really help us make a difference. I'd like you to lead this part of the project."

For a more complete guide to recruiting your stewardship team, visit ECF Vital Practices to watch this free webinar.

Audit Notifications Due
We appreciate those churches that have already sent in their 2013 audits. We also appreciate the rest of you who are diligently working on completion of your audits. If you know that you will not meet the September 1 deadline, please email Rosa Feeney and let her know when you expect to send it.

Property Usage Manual
The property committee is in the process of compiling a property usage manual that will provide resources to help you rent your space for an evening or for a year. If you have any templates or manuals you already use, we would love to see them. Please send them to Canon Julie Young.

Budget Planning Underway
Letters have been mailed to missions and aided parishes that are eligible to receive operating support, except for churches in north San Diego County who are engaged in future church discernment work and therefore will have a different process. The letter explains the grant process and requirements. Requests for congregational operating assistance are due on Tuesday, September 30. Program and ministry grant applications will be mailed in September. Property improvement grants are not currently available. Please email Canon Julie Young if you have an urgent need.

Open Enrollment
The Medical Trust is in the process of finalizing plan selections and pricing for 2015. These will be available in September at which time the diocesan personnel committee will choose which plans to offer. Information about the plans and their pricing will be provided to you in October. Open enrollment will take place in November. Stay tuned!

Church Pension Group Employee Roster
The Church Pension Group (CPG) is undertaking a major project called the employee roster. The goal is to create a database of all church employees. Some of you will receive information directly from CPG about how to provide the information. (Brief email) Free webinars explain the process. Register for webinar

Safeguarding God's People
Safeguarding God's People (SGP) is now online! Take the modules in the comfort of your own home. As part of the new SGP, there is an updated chart of who should take it.
