Unplug and Connect
The Bishop
Bishop Mathes

Beloved,

I pray that the summer holds moments of respite, reflection, and relaxation for you. When we slow down just a bit, we have a chance to breathe deeper. We can gain perspective. And we can listen to God.

It is in the quieter summer months and on vacation that I read more. I find myself wondering why I don't find the time to be more deliberate in feeding the soul twelve months of the year. I know that if I did I would be a better pastor, preacher and teacher. And yet...

And yet, the crisis of the moment always seems to press in. Perhaps even more invasive is the relentless stream of digital communication that calls for attention either through a ping or a vibration. The phone may be smart but it is not making me smarter. I become like Pavlov's dogs.

My experiment this summer is to unplug a bit. I am actually smarter than my phone. When I am down, I am going to turn off the wifi. I will still be available, but the emails can wait. I wonder how we can all change to be less plugged in and more connected to our families, each other, and to God.

I will let you know how it goes. I welcome hearing what you do to care for your soul.

Faithfully,
best jim
