Photo of the Month
A Look Back: As we celebrate our 40th birthday this month, we pause to reflect on where we've been. This photo of the Very Rev. James E. Carroll, snapped on the morning of the royal visit in 1983, represents a milestone in our collective history. Dean Carroll is holding the new 1979 Book of Common Prayer that he gave to Her Majesty the Queen.

St. Andrew's Rector Publishes Scholarly Article
Mainwaring Simon
Since the turn of the new millennium there has been a great deal of conversation about what sort of church might best be suited for the 21st century. Much of this work has tried to think about how the church might be accessible to the seeker, to the non-believer or spiritual but not religious person. Less attention has been given to the question of accessibility for the poor. In this essay, last month published in the academic journal, Ecclesiology, the School for Ministry's dean of studies, the Rev. Dr. Simon Mainwaring, makes the case for a practical ethic for such an accessibility for the poor in the church via the concept of mutuality. Access the article. Click on: 'Mutuality as a Postcolonial Praxis for Mission.'

SERVICE & OUTREACH
Episcopal Community Services Partners with Others to Help Homeless Neighbors
Episcopal Community Services (ECS) will facilitate three interactive trainings for the volunteers of the homeless ministry at St. Peter's, Del Mar this winter. This ministry takes place on their campus and focuses on serving Christ and others by providing sack lunches, clothing, hygiene products, and fellowship to homeless members of their local community. The trainings are aimed at better equipping St. Peter's team with insights, evidence-based practices, and tools for providing exceptional services to this challenging population.

ECS is excited about partnering with churches to serve our neighbors who are struggling with housing, mental health, and meeting basic needs. One additional way that we are teaming up with churches for service is the Footwashing on Maundy Thursday. This year there will be two locations - the Episcopal Church Center (ECC) and Friend to Friend (F2F). Shoes and socks will benefit homeless adults from both programs, footwashing will take place at both sites, etc. The ECC event will take place on Thursday, April 17th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and then a smaller but similar event will take place that same day from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for F2F members. Contact Nancy Holland for more information about volunteer opportunities and to sign up to purchase and donate shoes to support these events.

Hungry for Lent

Join Episcopal Community Services in giving up one meal each week for Lent. Donate what you would have spent on that meal to ECS programs for homeless, mentally ill people. From March 5- April 19, stand in solidarity with those who struggle to find their next meal. For more information, visit the website or contact Deann Ayer, 619-694-9892.

For more info or to sign up for the trip, contact Suzanne Warren, 619-437-8700.  www.dorcas-house.org
