Julie Young

Happy Epiphany! We are now into our new fiscal year. At the diocese, we are busy doing a preliminary close of books for the year in preparation for our audit. One of the big tasks is to make sure that all 2013 expense reimbursement requests have been submitted so that expenses can be booked in the year they were incurred.

We are looking forward to seeing most of you at convention. This year our 40th Annual Diocesan Convention focuses on celebrating the past and looking to the future as we kick off the Build the Serving Church capital campaign. Finance and administration workshops will be offered on March 15 at St. Bartholomew's, Poway in a special day-long conference for lay and clergy leadership. See below for more information.

Respectfully,
Canon Julie Young
Canon for Finance and Administration and Diocesan Treasurer

Parochial Reports
You should receive your parochial report form from the Episcopal Church soon if you have not already. We will offer webinar training on how to pull together the parochial report financial information on Wednesday, January 15 at 3 p.m. If you would like to participate, email Rosa Feeney by January 14. Parochial reports are due Saturday, March 1. This year, please provide your 2013 financial statement (reconciling the financials with the parochial report) and 2014 budget with your parochial report.

LALeadership Academy
On March 15 at St. Bartholomew's, Poway we will offer a lay and clergy leadership training day. There will be five tracks that will cover most everything church leaders need to know to be effective. In the finance and administration track, morning workshops will cover the basics of church finance /admin and human resource management. Afternoon workshops will focus on more specific topics and will tentatively include insurance, buildings and grounds, clergy and lay benefits, and church audits/parochial reports. Stay tuned for registration information.

Housing Resolutions
Don't forget to have your vestry pass a housing resolution for your priests so that they can benefit from the income tax exemption on the cost of housing. Templates can be found here: edsd.org/housingallowance. New to this page on the diocesan website is a housing resolution tailored for clergy living in rectories.

SECA vs FICA
Parish and mission priests are typically employees when it comes to income tax so they should get a W2. However, they are self employed for social security and medicare taxes. Therefore, they should not have FICA taken out of their paycheck nor should you as the employer pay the employer portion of FICA for your clergy members.

Audit Guidelines
A few of you are still finishing up your 2012 audits but the audit planning group has been busy refining the 2013 guidelines. These are available at www.edsd.org/audit. You will receive audit binders in early February; audit training will take place at the Leadership Academy on March 15.

Build and Equip Your Vestry
January vestry elections are happening now. Here are some tools from the Episcopal Church Foundation to help you find the right vestry members: Vestry Discernment Process. Also offered this winter are webinars on vestry orientation (January 13), vision and planning (February 4), and basics of parish finance (February 5). Descriptions of these webinars can be found at: www.ecfvp.org/webinars.
