Taste of CKS Reunion

CKS Alumni, past parents and former staff gathered on October 5, for the Taste of CKS Reunion to celebrate the school's 75th Anniversary.  The evening featured "tastes"  from local restaurants & caterers with alumni ties to CKS.  New this year was a Candoni Wine Bar, compliments of the De Zan family and their Italian winery.  Sister Jean Liston even made the trek from Pennsylvania to be a part of the festivities!

More Reunion Fun
Class of 1978
Donna Izlar Reavely, who currently lives in California, was in town for a visit and contacted an old friend from CKS.  Pretty soon, members of the Class of 1978 were calling other former classmates and an impromptu "reunion" was held at the home of Jennifer Pitra Wootten.  Even Monsignor Richard Lopez stopped by to visit with his old students.  This is just another example of how the bonds established at CKS transcend numerous years and thousands of miles.

Murray Family
In a class all their own, the Murray family gathered for a reunion at the Bowers Farm in Bushnell, Florida this fall....which of course meant that a CKS Alumni photo was in order!  At last count, there are 20 CKS alums or current students from the Noel & Bud Murray tree.  What a great group!

St. Cecilia Statue - Original
Original St. Cecilia Statue
St. Cecilia  Returns  to CKS

This year's All Saints' Day Mass was made special by the return of a long lost friend - the statue of St. Cecilia.  As the story was told by CKS Alum Genny Lucchese Kelly (CKHS '51), years ago Christ the King School had a lovely statue of St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music.  The statue disappeared, and over the years, no one could remember what had happened to it.  Urban legends held a variety of ideas and suggestions.  Last year's Grandparents' Day capitalized on this with its theme "Where in the World is St. Cecilia?" In attendance at last year's celebration was a grandparent, Tracy Winchester, grandmother to Pre-1st student Amelia Minutelli.  Mr. and Mrs. Winchester's three children, Samantha (CKS '89), Buzz (CKS '92), and Blair (CKS '95), all attended Christ the King, and the Winchesters have been dedicated and faithful supporters of CKS for many years.

One day a very large rectangular box from Italy arrived at the school.   Much to the surprise of the school administrators, it was St. Cecilia!  When Mrs. Winchester realized that the school had no statue of St. Cecilia, she decided to replace it.  The detail of carving is amazing and depicts a beautiful and delicate young woman. She is the same size as the statues in the d'Youville Chapel on campus and appears to be carved from the same wood.

CKS All Saints Mass - Nov 2012
Mr. & Mrs. Winchester, the Minutelli Family, Archbishop Gregory, Father Frank, and the new St. Cecilia Statue
At the All Saints' Day Mass, the new St. Cecilia was blessed by the Archbishop.  Present at the mass were the Winchester and Minutelli families.  After mass, St. Cecilia was moved to her new home, the d'Youville Chapel. There she rests on a plinth between two of the stained glass windows, one of which depicts none other than - St. Cecilia.

Kelly Miles Message from our Alumni Chair
What an exciting fall!  The campus is abuzz with activities galore as we as a Cathedral and school celebrate our 75th Anniversary.   It was great fun to see so many alums, past parents and former faculty & staff at the Taste of CKS Reunion in October.  The food was fantastic, and the reminiscing was even better.  It was our biggest event ever with nearly 200 guests in Kenny Hall.  We owe all of our vendors, sponsors and silent auction donors a big thank you.  With their generosity, we were able to raise over $7,500 for the CKS Endowment Fund - how appropriate for our 75th Anniversary!  Let's keep the momentum going!  If you haven't done so already, consider a gift of $75 to CKS in honor of our 75th Anniversary.  We as an Alumni Association have a goal of $75,000 that we'd like to meet, and with your help we can do it!  See the 75 to Thrive article below for details.

My best to you and yours this Christmas season.  May your 2013 be filled with blessings!

Kelly Cambias Miles (CKS '82)
CKS Alumni Chair

Grandparents Day 2012 - Nuns Grandparents' Day
Lots of alums were back on campus, this time in the role of grandparents, for our annual Grandparents' Day performance in November.  In celebration of our 75th Anniversary, CKS students serenaded guests with songs of the decades, from the time that CKS first opened in the 30's through today.  Led through the decades by singing Grey Nuns, representing all of the principals of CKS through the generations, grandparents were treated to The Andrews Sisters, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and much more.
Grandparents Day 2012 - Webb

Three generations of the Webb family were on hand (clockwise from the left):  Mike (CKS '83), Ella (CKS '15), Madeline (CKS '20), Denny (CKS '54) and Lucy (CKS '18).

Pius XC Girls - Fall 2012
Devon Dabney (CKS '09) center with Sara Fristoe (CKS '09) to her right.
Fleet Feet Abound
What is in the water at CKS?  By the results at the latest cross country state championships, obviously something fast!  CKS Alums were all over the awards' podiums at both the middle school and high school meets.  The boys and girls of Marist School and St. Pius X High School captured state championships in Class AAAA and Class AAA  respectively.  Leading the way for Marist was Michael Thurston (CKS '10) who captured the individual title.  For St. Pius, Devon Dabney (CKS '09) finished second in the state while Joey Ferrugia (CKS '10) finished third.

Marist XC Boys - Fall 2012
Marcus Danckert (CKS '14) far left, William O'Rielly (CKS '14) to his right, and Gus Eckstein (CKS '13) far right.

At the middle school level, Marist combined to win the overall state championship in the large school divison.  Gus Eckstein (CKS '13) led the way with a 13th place finish while Meg Fennelly (CKS '13) crossed the line in 20th position.

Marist Homecoming - Fall 2012
Marist Homecoming Court Members and Sweethearts:  Leigh Peters (CKS '10), Caitlin Prater (CKS '09) - First Runner-Up, Leighton Carlock (CKS '09) and Isabella McDevitt (CKS '12).
Lovely Ladies & Gridiron Gents
CKS Alums were well represented on homecoming courts at both Marist and St. Pius this year.  In addition to the lovely Marist ladies shown here, CKS court representatives at St. Pius included Berlin Sewell, John Weber, Matt Angulo, Thomas Shevlin, Moira Sweeney and Caroline Wootten (CKS '09) and Kevin Quigley, Kaitlyn Orman, and Carolyn Bresnahan (CKS '10).
Berlin Sewell - Pius Football 2012
Berlin Sewell (CKS '09)

While their counterparts in dresses & ties looked great, classmates in shoulder pads and cleats were also quite successful on the football field.  Marist advanced to the AAAA Semifinal and St. Pius to the AAA State Championship, both with plenty of CKS Alums represented.  The Marist team included Fletcher Malloy (CKS '10) and Gus McNearney, Will Pearson, Sam Phelts and Ryan Prater (CKS '11).  The St. Pius roster boasted Ryan Foster, J.P. Graves, Jack McIntyre, Matt Pearson and Berlin Sewell (CKS '09), Chandler Cooper (CKS '10), and Drew Einbender, Luke Stokes and Forest Whitlark (CKS '11).

Endowment Fund 75 to Thrive Campaign
As noted in our e-mail blast to alums last week, the Alumni Committee has set a goal of $75,000 to the CKS Endowment Fund for the year.  In the past we have encouraged alums to support the school in numerous ways, but in honor of our milestone anniversary, we thought that having alumni invest in the future of the school en masse would be a fitting tribute.  Please consider a gift of $75, but gifts of any size are encouraged and welcomed.  By supporting the Endowment Fund, you will be investing in the long-term financial viability of the school.  Give now and meet the 2012 tax deadline as well!
Rock for Owen 2012

L to R: Dennis & Emily Wilson Callahan (CKS '90), David Stokes, Marty & Erin Preston Lovings (CKS '90), & Noelle Preston Wooldridge (CKS '87).

Rock for Owen
This year's Rock for Owen event was another big success!  Held at East Andrews Cafe in Buckhead, the night featured CKS Alumni Band Second Verse and as well the ever-popular My Favorite Baldwin.

Rock for Owen is an event in tribute to Owen Stokes, son of David and CKS Alum Laura Preston Stokes (CKS '84).  Owen passed away five years ago, just two months before he was to begin Kindergarten at Christ the King School.  In order to help keep Owen's angelic memory alive, the Stokes family established a scholarship in his name at CKS and is in the process of doing the same at St. Pius X High School.  All proceeds from this event (over $5,000!) will fund those scholarships as well as the Make-A-Wish Foundation.  Click here if you wish to contribute.

A word of thanks from the Stokes Family:

Thank you to everyone who came out to support our Annual Rock for Owen Benefit. We had over 300 people attend! We want to thank everyone who donated items to the auction.  We could not have made this happen without the help of our wonderful friends. Your support meant so much to us.  We raised enough money to donate to Owen's Scholarship, Make A Wish Foundation, and start a new scholarship at St. Pius.  You are all so special to us and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Love, Laura, David, Luke, Emma, Lily, and Rory
