Farewell, Mrs. Warner
After over 28 years at Christ the King School, 23 of which as principal, Mrs. Peggy Warner will be retiring later this month. The last two decades have been full of change under Mrs. Warner's leadership. In 1987, CKS was designated a National School of Excellence, and in 2007 received the Blue Ribbon School designation - both illustrations of the high standard of academic excellence that has become synonymous with Christ the King School.
In addition to the academic accolades, Mrs. Warner has overseen two capital campaigns which upgraded classroom spaces, lowered class sizes and significantly increased the footprint of the campus.

The end of the school year included many celebrations in Mrs. Warner's honor including Mrs. Warner Day on campus, a day of fun for all students that included serenades to Mrs. Warner by each of the grades, a living rosary and series of "athletic endeavors" including Hippity Hop, Cup Stacking, a Bubble Relay and more.
In addition, former and current faculty, past and current parents and alumni gathered to celebrate Mrs. Warner's tenure at a farewell reception on May 24. Hundreds of people came to thank her for her hard work on behalf of the school and to bid her farewell and Godspeed. As Christ the King School prepares to celebrate its 75th Anniversary, Mrs. Warner's steady influence has set the school on the right path to continue to excel for the next 75 years. Thank you!

One Stitch at a Time: Peggy Warner Profile
*reflections on the retirement of Mrs. Peggy Warner by Meg Jones Fligg (CKS '85)

There isn't a loom in CKS principal Peggy Warner's office. No needles or thread either. That's odd because Peggy is a master at her craft. In fact, she's spent the last 20+ years weaving together a tapestry that illustrates what happens when faith, academics and service are intertwined in a student's life.

According to Peggy, the common thread has always been a shared Catholic faith. She draws strength from each school mass where the power of 500+ students joined in prayer cannot be ignored. And, she is proud to see so many students raise their hands during the homily to answer one of Fr. Frank's "tricky questions." She has seen both joy and sorrow in her years as a teacher, vice principal and principal at CKS. Faith has been a constant companion.

Tapestries are not woven overnight. The last two decades have been full of change at CKS. Peggy has been involved in it all, including three different carpool formats. The expansion of CKS in the early 1990's stands out. The project added new classrooms, an administrative office, a reception area and the second story breezeway. Peggy cannot forget the amazing experience brought to the table by parents and former parents who met weekly throughout the extended project, devoting weekends to the effort.

Arriving at CKS' doorstep as a long-term substitute teacher in April, 1983, Peggy was thrilled with her third grade students and classroom at the top of the school. She was less than thrilled at the lack of air conditioning and remembers the excitement that rippled through the school when ceiling fans were installed in 1984. The school finally came of age a few years later when, with Monsignor Kenny's blessing, a zoned air conditioning system was installed.

Air conditioning wasn't the only upgrade over the years. Like time, technology marched on and chalkboards gave way to smart boards and typewriters turned into laptops under Peggy's watch. Made possible through Parent Volunteer Association and School Auction proceeds, CKS students and teachers have flourished with smart boards, information software and data management systems, not to mention improved communication through e-mail and voicemail.

Peggy knows that a school's personality comes from its people...not technology. Teachers who are alumni, past parents and those drawn to the school by its reputation and values make up the team who lead, administer, teach and care for the school's Kindergartners through eighth graders. She is both humbled and inspired by this group every time she walks the school halls and freely acknowledges that surrounding herself with these caring and smart people has made the difference in her more than 20 years.

Above all, her heart is full of gratitude for the administrative "family" who has grown with her. She is quick to say, "In the twenty plus years we've worked together, we've become like family, sharing more than 500 kids." And, with CKS parents constantly sharing their professional expertise, Peggy quickly confirms that continuous school improvement was, and is, a communal effort.

As Peggy reflects on her time at CKS, the picture on the tapestry she has woven over the years emerges. It is both beautiful and unique. And, there is no doubt that St. Marguerite d'Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns who started Christ the King School, is smiling.

Message from our Alumni Chair
Ah, the lazy (or not so lazy) days of summer are upon us. I hope this newsletter finds you relaxing at the pool or beach with an iced tea (or other beverage) in hand. While the kids are enjoying their summer, our alumni team is busy planning THE party of the last 75 years at CKS! Our Taste of CKS event on October 5 will be a reunion celebration to remember! We're inviting not only alums, but also past parents, former faculty and staff, and friends of CKS to join us for the night, too. Stick around for the 75th Anniversary Carnival the next day to make it an entire weekend of fun. Rumor has it that Sister Jean will be making the trek from Pennsylvania so don't miss this chance to reminisce with her. Volunteers are still needed on the planning team as well as the night of the event. Please send me an e-mail if you can help. Thanks!

 High School Send-off
The CKS Class of 2008 gathered in May at the home of Phillip Quigley to celebrate together before their senior year drew to a close and they began high school graduation festivities.
Alumni Representative Maria Eliot led the effort to bring over 30 former classmates together from high schools around the city. Classmates had a chance to look through old CKS yearbooks and swap stories of their days together. |
|
The Class of 2008 is an impressive one that boasted a valedictorian, student body presidents, state champion speech and debate team members, and state champion athletes from schools across Atlanta. The class included winners of numerous academic awards as well as leaders in the service and spiritual life community. Great work, gang!

In 2012, Brandon hit a team-leading .360 with 44 RBI for the Yellow Jackets and was named First Team All ACC for both the season and the tournament. In addition to his many baseball accomplishments, Brandon has excelled in the classroom at Tech. He was named a 2012 Capital One Academic All-American and honored as a member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2010, 2011 and 2012.
