Kelly MilesMessage from our Alumni Chair
It's hard to believe that another school year is almost in the books.  This year's end will be a bittersweet one as we say goodbye to Mrs. Warner.  I hope you'll make plans to join us for her farewell cocktail party on May 24.  It's sure to be a lovely night of remembrances as we send her off to enjoy retirement.

Plans are just now coming together for our big event of the year (or rather the big event of the last 75 years)!  Mark your calendars for October 5, 2012 for the Taste of CKS Reunion to celebrate our 75th anniversary.  We're looking for lots of volunteers so please contact me at the e-mail below if you can help.  We'll take as much or as little of your time as you're willing to offer.

Pack the House

Basketball was the theme as CKS alums, families, and friends gathered in the Hyland Center Gym in February for the annual Pack the House event to celebrate the end of the basketball season.  The festivities started with the annual alumni basketball game and we're happy to report that we had alumni representation from both guys and gals! Alums and their families were treated to pizza and drinks as they enjoyed the 8th Grade vs. Parents games and trophy presentations.  A night of fun on the hardwood for all!

Alumni Night at Festivity - March 2012

Festivity - small logoAlumni Night at Festivity

Thanks to all those alums who joined us for CKS Alumni Night at Festivity in March.  Guests enjoyed wine and cheese as they perused one of Buckhead's favorite boutiques, owned by CKS Parent Colleen Nilan.  Jennifer Pitra Wootten (CKS '78) was the lucky winner of a $100 gift card from the drawing.  Both shoppers and CKS were winners, with over $500 coming to the Alumni Scholarship thanks to your purchases.

Cullum Owings 2012 - Erin SheeranCullum Owings Scholarship

At the Peacemaker Mass on January 13, the Cullum Owings Scholarship was presented to Erin Sheeran by Cullum's younger brother Pierce. Cullum was a student at CKS from Kindergarten through sixth grade. In 2002, his brilliant life was cut short in a tragic accident during his senior year of college, but his spirit remains alive at CKS. A scholarship was established by dear friends of the Owings family, and many of Cullum and Pierce's friends from CKS contribute to the fund annually. Each year this scholarship is given to a sixth grade student who fully embodies Cullum's personality in that they are well-rounded and display a balance of academic, athletic and social interests; that they are compassionate and show kindness to all; and that they display natural leadership inside and outside of the classroom. Erin is the daughter of CKS Alum Kristen Strougal Sheeran (CKS '79).

Owen Stokes 2012 - Joseph PizzoOwen Stokes Scholarship

Joseph Pizzo was awarded the Owen Stokes Scholarship at a school Mass in April.  This scholarship is awarded in memory of Owen Stokes, son of David and Laura Preston Stokes (CKS '84), who passed away suddenly just two months before he was to begin Kindergarten at CKS. Like Owen, the recipient must be a Kindergarten boy who demonstrates a passion for reading, sports and arts-and-crafts. The recipient must also be kind, well-mannered, good at sharing and always ready to do the right thing.  Joseph is pictured here with his parents, Maria and Peter Pizzo, as well as members of the Stokes Family, Luke (CKS '11), Emma (CKS '13), Lily (CKS '19), Rory, Laura and David.

Hugh Acheson - April 2012Hugh Acheson - CKS Alum?

Yes, he is!  Few may know that even though originally from Ottawa, Canada, Hugh Acheson lived on Rumson Road in Garden Hills and attended Christ the King School for 6th and 7th grades.  Hugh is the author of A New Turn in the South: Southern Flavors Reinvented for Your Kitchen and chef/partner of the Athens, Georgia, restaurants Five and Ten and The National, and the Atlanta restaurant Empire State South. He is a six-time James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southeast and was named a Best Chef by Food & Wine Magazine. Hugh competed in Bravo's Top Chef Masters, Season 3 and currently stars as a judge on Top ChefClick here to read more about his endeavors as chef, restaurateur and author.

Debate Teams Make History

Is it our annual Oratory Competition that sets the foundation for years of success?  We'd like to think so!  CKS Alums made history at both Marist and St. Pius X this year with outstanding showings in debate competitions in Georgia.

Led by Keller Sheppard (CKS '08), St. Pius is sending not only one but TWO teams to the National Forensics League National Championship in Indianapolis this June.  Keller was a member of one of the qualifying teams and fellow CKS Alum Matt Angulo (CKS '09) will serve as part of the first alternate team for the event.  Each year only two teams from North Georgia and four from the state are selected to participate, so this is quite an honor!

In addition, the Marist Debate Team made history by earning its first bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions in April at the University of Kentucky.  CKS Alum Rachel Thurston (CKS '08) was a member of the two-person team that qualified.  Marist is one of only ten schools in Georgia and 72 in the nation to obtain a bid.
