Mrs. Warner...Through the Years
As you know from our announcement last month, Mrs. Warner will be retiring at the end of the 2011-12 school year. Plans are underway for her final farewell celebration! Mark your calendars now for Thursday, May 24 for a Farewell Cocktail Party in her honor. Details will be coming via eNews or e-mail as they are finalized, so check your inbox.
After 28 years at CKS, Mrs. Warner has seen many students come and go. Hairstyles have changed, air conditioning installed (can you believe we ever lived without it?), and new buildings erected during her time here. As Mrs. Warner winds down her last months at CKS, we thought it might be fun to look back at some of our favorite photos from years gone by. Do any of these bring back memories?

|
|
Shhhhh.....It's a Surprise!
As part of a going-away gift for Mrs. Warner, we are creating a book of photos, memories and more! We'd love for alums, past parents, former faculty and staff to contribute. Please send us your favorite memory, funny story, a note of congratulations or well wishes for Mrs. Warner and we'll include as many as we can in the book. Send your notes in an e-mail to Melissa Porter at CKSAlumni@christking.org no later than March 1. Thank you.
Mrs. Warner is receiving a copy of the alumni newsletter with this section removed, so remember, mum's the word!

Philip Consuegra speaks at NJHS Induction
Old and new came together on Friday, February 10 as Philip Consuegra (CKS '98) returned as the keynote speaker at the National Junior Honor Society Induction in Kenny Hall. Philip is a 2002 graduate of St. Pius X and a 2006 graduate of Villanova University. He holds a Master's Degree in International Affairs from the University of Miami and is about to begin work on a Master's Degree in Education at the University of Illinois.
Philip is currently the Director of Development and Advancement for Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and even finds time to teach AP U.S. Government and Politics to seniors. Prior to his arrival at Pine Crest, Philip served as the South Florida Campaign Manager for the Rudy Giuliani Presidential Committee and Legislative Director to State Representative Edward Lindsey. Philip also announced some exciting personal news...he will be marrying fellow CKS alum Leslie Trammell (CKS '03) at the Cathedral this summer. (For the record, he has promised pictures in a future eNews!)
During his speech, Philip reminded the inductees, "...Remembering where you came from and why you are so fortunate is a key aspect of success." And that "...being successful isn't always measured by what you can count or what you can see. Things like honor, integrity, character, and two things most of all - passion and faith" are just as essential.
Philip also recounted what Mrs. Warner wrote in his yearbook as a graduating 8th grader. Curious? Click here to see the answer in the full transcript of his speech.

 Message from our Alumni Chair
As the cathedral prepares to celebrate its 75th year, we are excited to also celebrate 75 years at CKS. We want to call on all CKS alums near and far to be a major part of the festivities. We will be kicking off the year-long events with an unprecedented CKS Reunion on Friday, October 5. We have never had an event like this and hope to have a great turnout of not only alums but past parents and friends of the school, too. If you're not in Atlanta, make the trek for this special night featuring "tastes" from restaurants and caterers with alumni ties. More details will be coming in a future eNews, but make your plans today. Please let us know if you would like to be involved. And please look for old photos, yearbooks and memorabilia. It will be a special night!

CKS Scholarships
A number of scholarships have been awarded to CKS students since our last edition of Alumni eNews. For more information or to make a donation to one of these scholarships, see the CKS website or click here now.
|
Sister Jean Liston Scholarship Awarded to a 4th grader each year at the All Saints' Mass in honor of Sister Jean Liston, a long-time principal at the school, the recipient of the Sister Jean Liston Scholarship should embody the teachings of St. Marguerite D'Youville, founder of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. They should exemplify the values of compassion, peace, justice, reverence for life and always strive to develop an abiding trust in a provident God. The winner should share Sr. Jean's passion and proficiency in mathematics. Congratulations to this year's winner, Hank Toomey, pictured here with Auxiliary Bishop Zarama and his parents Jennifer and Bill.

Mama Noel & Bud Murray Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student who embodies the qualities that Mr. and Mrs. Murray taught their own nine children who attended Christ the King School: always make your best effort, be kind and helpful to others, volunteer your talents, respect authority, be a peace maker and grow in God's grace each day. This year, Noel Schildgen (CKS '01), granddaughter of Noel and Bud Murray, presented the award to 8th grader Annie Klopstock. On hand to congratulate Annie were two of the Murray's children, Neno Murray Schildgen (CKS '64) and Susan Murray Euart (CKS '60) as well as their great granddaughter Kate Euart, a CKS 1st grader. Also pictured here with Annie and the Murray family members are Annie's father and grandfather.

Katherine Johansen Davis ScholarshipAn ever faithful servant of the Lord, Katherine Johansen Davis spent the last six decades of her life volunteering her time at both the Cathedral and Christ the King School. When she passed away in 2010, her family asked that memorial gifts be sent to CKS in order to establish the Katherine Johansen Davis Scholarship. This year, the scholarship was awarded to CKS 5th grader Evan Kreitner, a student "who uses his or her talents and gifts to make Christ the King School more Christ-like." The scholarship was presented by Katherine's son Joe Davis (CKS '58), who remarked how appropriate it was to present the award during Catholic Schools Week due to his mother's deep love of Catholic education, and Christ the King School in particular. Along with Evan are his parents, Robert and Christina, as well as Fred and Barbara Gunning Johansen (CKHS '50) and Joe's wife, Donna Davis, a former teacher at CKS.

Georgia Natural Gas - True Blue Schools
If you live in the state of Georgia, take a moment to read about this easy way to help Christ the King School that will take only 2 minutes of your time.
Each quarter, CKS receives a check from Georgia Natural Gas True Blue Schools program simply because GNG customers have added the school to their customer profile. For each of those customers, GNG donates $5 per month to CKS - at NO cost to the customer. Since 2009, CKS has received a total of $16,580 through this program.
We currently have 1,600 alums in our database that live in the state of Georgia. Just think...if all of them participated, CKS would receive $96,000 every year!
How can you help?
If you are a GNG customer, all you need to do is click here to log on to the GNG website, select Christ the King School, and provide your account number. For as long as you are a GNG customer, the school will receive $5 per month, at absolutely no cost to you. It's as easy as that to donate $60 per year to CKS!
If you are not currently a GNG customer and want to participate in this program, click here to log on to the GNG website and select the option that says "I Want to Become a GNG Customer." Once you have done that, select Christ the King School as your school of choice and follow the remaining instructions on how to become a GNG customer. You will save up to $0.15 per therm for joining and CKS will receive $5 per month for as long as you are a customer.
Thank you for taking the time to help today!

Alumni Teachers
We saw yet another alum return to CKS and join our faculty this year. Kathryn Ledlie (CKS '00) is now one of our 1st grade teachers. She joins five other current alumni teachers on our staff. Christy Dozier Wolfe (CKS '00), Margaret Berg (CKS '01) and Karen Baxter (CKS '00) are the trifecta of alumni teachers in 2nd grade. Kristine Maksimowski Wix (CKS '90) teaches middle school math and science and Maggie Barton (CKS '02) assists in Kindergarten. What a great testament to the affinity our alums have for their alma mater!

Our New Crop of Kindergarten Legacies

Entitled The Checklist: Getting into Medical School from Day One of College to the Letter of Acceptance, the book guides college students on the path to a medical acceptance letter. He graduated from St. Pius X in 2005 and from UGA's Honors program in 2009.

Shockley Nunnery (CKS '08) Not to be outdone, younger brother Shockley (shown here with his Mom) was recently named Valedictorian of the Class of 2012 at St. Pius X High School. Shockley was also named a 21st Century 20-under-20 Leader for Atlanta. In addition to being an outstanding student, Shockley co-founded Operation I Care with fellow CKS alum Keller Sheppard (we detailed their efforts in the Winter 2010 edition of Alumni eNews). Keller and Shockley have amassed over 2,300 glasses for the needy. In their spare time, they're also Student Body Presidents!

Liz has been a 4-year starter on the St. Pius X team and holds the single season school record for average, runs batted in, triples and hits. She also currently holds the record for most hits in a single game with four. In addition to her success on the diamond, Liz has been a Dean's List or Honor Roll student since arriving at St. Pius X and is also a member of the varsity basketball team that is currently ranked in the Top 5 in Georgia.

Trey White (CKS '08) Trey has committed to play football at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. A three-year starter for St. Pius X, Trey has his name etched in the record books. He holds records for most rushing yards in a game as well as multiple records for longest individual rushes from scrimmage, rushing touchdowns and passing touchdowns. After completing a perfect regular season in 2011, Coach Paul Standard noted, "Trey White will go down in history as one of the best quarterbacks in St. Pius X football history." But it's not all about football for Trey, he and fellow CKS Alum Walker McKenzie are broadcasters for the weekly podcasts of St. Pius basketball games.
|
Chandler Ryberg (CKS '08) Chandler, a member of the 200m freestyle relay team at St. Pius X, will swim for the University of Alabama next year. Ryberg, a school record-holder in the 200m free relay and an All-American in the same event, will be joining a Crimson Tide program that has finished 26 times in the top 25 and produced 109 All-Americans.
|
Devon Dabney (CKS '09) & Joseph Ferrugia (CKS '10) The St. Pius X Cross Country Teams ended the 2011 season in outstanding fashion, with a state runner-up finish on the girls' side and a state championship on the boys'. Devon Dabney led the Golden Lions with an 11th place finish overall and Joseph Ferrugia played a key role for the boys with a 25th place showing. Congratulations to both!
