CKHS Class of 1951... Together Again
The CKHS Class of 1951 gathered on campus in early May to celebrate their 60th reunion. Joining the high school alums was their grade school classmate Jack Tarleton, as well as Maxine Brown and Susan Brown Ficklen (CKS '57), mother and sister of alum Judy Brown McDaniel who recently passed away. The group enjoyed seeing what had changed and what had stayed the same as they toured campus with Maud Kelly (CKS '12), a rising 8th grader and granddaughter of classmate Genny Lucchese Kelly. Following the tour, the group attended mass together in the Cathedral followed by a catered lunch with Father Frank McNamee. Plans are already in the works for the next gathering!

High School Send-off
The CKS Class of 2007 gathered in May at the home of Zack Wootten to celebrate together before their senior year drew to a close and they began high school graduation festivities. Alumni Representatives Caitlin Griffin and Janey Nelson chaired the event that brought over 30 former classmates together from high schools around the city. Classmates had a chance to look through old CKS yearbooks and swap stories of their days together. Best of luck to all as they head to college next fall!

Alumni Chair Message
I hope everyone is having a safe and relaxing summer. Another year has come to a close at CKS, and we would like to extend congratulations and a welcome to the newest members of our alumni group, the Class of 2011. Good luck to everyone as they enter high school in the fall. CKS was thrilled to host the class of 1951 as they returned to the school for their 50th reunion in May. What a treat for the ladies (and one gentleman) to tour the school to see today's students at work as they reminisced about their own CKS experiences. We are hard at work for the 3rd annual Taste of CKS Alumni Party which will be held on October 6 in Kenny Hall. Please mark your calendars and plan to visit with fellow alums in the fall...and be sure to send me an e-mail if you'd like to volunteer for the event. We could certainly use your help.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Alumni Scholarship
During the last mass of the school year in May, the Alumni Scholarship was awarded to rising 8th grader Maud Kelly. Maud is the daughter of Mary Gail Muse and Bob Kelly (CKS '78), and the granddaughter of Genny Lucchese Kelly (CKHS '51). The alumni scholarship is awarded to a rising 8th grader who displays citizenship, responsibility, service and commitment to family. Preference for the award is always given to a legacy. Congratulations, Maud!

Make-a-Wish of Georgia
CKS Band Second Verse was the highlight of a family festival in Duluth on May 15 celebrating Make-a-Wish of Georgia's 5,000th wish. The little girl that was granted the 5,000th wish wanted a yorkie puppy and a parade to show off her new friend. The festival included food, jumpy houses, and face painting, all donated by local businesses. Second Verse has played multiple events and venues over their many years together and currently includes CKS Alums Forrest Whitlark (CKS '11), Luke Stokes (CKS '11), John MacLane (CKS '12), William MacLane (CKS '12), as well as rising 8th grader Kate Whitlark (CKS '12).

CKS Receives a $50,000 Grant
The Coca-Cola Foundation has awarded $50,000 to Christ the King School to underwrite the physical education and health program here at CKS. We thank the Coca-Cola Company and its philanthropic arm, The Coca-Cola Foundation, along with the sixteen Coke families at CKS, for their extraordinary support of our wonderful school!

Soccer Champs
CKS Alums took center stage as key players on the St. Pius Girls' and Boys' Soccer Teams that captured the AAA state titles in May. Caroline Wootten (CKS '09), Elizabeth Eidson (CKS '09), Kirby Retherford (CKS '10), and Kaitlyn Orman (CKS '10) were all part of the girls' team that dominated the competition to win their third consecutive state championship, not allowing an opponent to score a single goal throughout their playoff run. Not to be outdone, CKS Alum Andrew Korizno (CKS '07) was a member of the St. Pius Boys' team that took home the state crown for the second time in three years. Congratulations to all!

|
Leading the Way
A number of CKS Alums have been voted into leadership positions in student government in high school. Perhaps it's their excellent preparation while at CKS! Shockley Nunnery and Keller Sheppard (CKS '08) were elected Co-Presidents of the St. Pius Student Body. Kaitlyn Orman and Carolyn Bresnahan (CKS '10) were named Co-Presidents of next year's sophomore class at St. Pius. Three of the Marist Junior Classical League Officers for next year are also CKS Alums: Courtney Marburger (CKS '10), Frances Monardo (CKS '10) and Maggie Schaffer (CKS '11). |
Athletes Off to College
A number of CKS Alums will be taking their skills to the next level, continuing their athletic endeavors in college.
|

Tori Andrews (CKS '07) will take her fleet feet to Washington & Lee next year to join both their cross country and track teams. While at Marist, Tori helped lead the girls' cross country team to three consecutive AAAA state titles, finishing in the Top 5 for the team in each of those three championships. She also ran the steeplechase at the Georgia Tech Invitational finishing fourth overall, first for AAAA.
|
Agyeman Botchway (CKS '07) will add his midfielder skills to the University of Pennsylvania's soccer team next fall. Agyeman led Marist's soccer team to the playoffs all four years of his high school career (a first for the school) and a AAAA state championship in 2009. As a freshman he was selected to the US National Youth Team and to the US National Men's U18 Team as a senior. If that weren't enough, he was named an All-American in 2007-08 and 2010-11, selected to the All-State first team in 2010-11, and invited to play with the Chelsea Professional Football Club in London. Very impressive!
|
Hadley Judson (CKS '07) will be heading to Centre College next fall to continue her swimming career. Hadley was a 4-year member of the varsity team at Marist and a 3-year state qualifier. In addition to being named the Most Improved Swimmer in 2011, Hadley won the 100 freestyle B finals and placed third in the 200 freestyle B finals to finish 9th and 11th respectively in the state.

Do the Zoo!
Members of Mrs. Carter's Pre-First Class at CKS made a special trip to Zoo Atlanta this past spring. Who did they have the privilege of meeting? Zoo Atlanta CEO and CKS Alum Raymond King (CKS '79). What a treat as old and new members of the CKS family were able to share a special 'hello' and photo with their flamingo friends in the background.

Calhoun Family Tradition
We couldn't resist sharing this funny, but rather gory, tale of the Calhoun family and their unfortunate "relationship" with the pavement of our own CKS playground. Here it is:
- When Stewart (CKS '82) was in the 5th grade, he fell off his bike near the cafeteria, busted his chin, left a big pool of DNA on the sidewalk (and a stain that lasted for years), and had to go to the hospital.
- Sister Agie Craft Rutowski (CKS '94) followed suit when in 4th grade, she tripped on the sidewalk near the playground with hands in pockets, busted her chin, left a big pool on the sidewalk, and had to go to the hospital.
- Son James, a CKS 5th grader, completed the trifecta by colliding with a classmate this spring, leaving a similar stain on the sidewalk before heading to the hospital.
That's a 30-year family tradition dating back to 1979 that we think stands alone among proud moments in CKS history.
