Alumni eNews - Winter 2011

Hoop it up!

Basketball was the theme as CKS alums, families, and friends gathered in the Hyland Center Gym on Friday, February 11 for the annual Pack the House event to celebrate the end of the basketball season.  The festivities started with the annual alumni basketball game which we can happily report...ended without injury!  Be sure to congratulate our brave guys and gals who left it all on the court.  Alumni and their families were treated to pizza and drinks as they enjoyed the 8th Grade vs. Parents and Coaches vs. Coaches games as well.  A night of fun on the hardwood for all!

Message from our Alumni Chair
It was great to see many of you at the annual Pack the House event three weeks ago. Thanks to all our sponsors and those that played and volunteered for the event.  We were able to raise more than $1,600 for the CKS Alumni Scholarship.  The annual CKS Auction will be held on April 30, and we would love to extend an invitation to all alumni.  It will be held "under the stars" in a beautiful tent at Christ the King.  Gather some fellow classmates and join us!  As always, please send us updates so we can all keep in touch.

CKS Eagle Scouts

On February 13, five CKS Alumni were honored at a Troop 74 Eagle Scout Court of Honor.  These young men began their trek as Cub Scouts with Pack 165 at the Cathedral many years ago.  They now join an esteemed group of Eagle Scout recipients that include Olympian Willie Banks, film-maker Ron Howard and businessman Ross Perot.  On average, it takes most scouts six years to earn the rank of Eagle, and less than 4% of all Boy Scouts ever reach this milestone.   Each one of these young men should be commended for their efforts!

Benjamin Storrs, Zach Wootten, Henry Sewell, Drew Orman, Stephen Fristoe - all members of the CKS Class of 2007.

They join an impressive list of alums who have also achieved this honor:

Larkins, Larkins Everywhere

Tony Larkin

There's much dramatic talent to be had in the Larkin family!  Tony (CKS '95) was a featured role in Carapace on the Hertz Stage of the Alliance Theatre in February and March. Carapace is a new script and was directed by Broadway Tony winning actress Judith Ivey.  Tony is a professional actor who has worked in theaters in New York City, Boston and Atlanta.

Susan Larkin

Tony's mom, Susan Shalhoub Larkin, was also busy during February and March as one of a two-part cast of The Outrageous Adventures of Sheldon and Mrs. Levine at the Art Station in Stone Mountain.  Look for more from Susan in May as she will be on stage in Over the River and Through the Woods at the Aurora Theater.  Besides being a CKS mom and past PVA President, Susan just retired after 19 years on staff as our Administrative Coordinator.  Although she's not here on a day-to-day basis anymore, she continues to be the "Voice of CKS" on our message machine!

CKS Alums Return St. Pius X Girls' Basketball to Stardom

Not since the days of Kelley Cain (currently playing for the famed Lady Volunteers of Tennessee) has SPX Girls' Basketball seen this kind of success.  Led by five CKS Alums from the Class of 2008, the team captured the Region 5AAA Championship (beating last year's state champ Columbia High School to do so), reached the Elite 8 in the state championship, and finished the season 25-6 overall, 17-0 in region play.  Of the five CKS girls on the team, four are starters.  The fifth player, Elizabeth Schneider, is a stand-out softball player, currently being recruited by several colleges.

Success started early for these girls.  All played together since first grade at CKS and continued their rise through the CMLA and AAU leagues.  As 8th graders on opposing teams, they reached the CMLA finals against one another.  The beauty is that they're now teammates on the varsity squad at St. Pius, using their combined talents with great success.  Congratulations, girls!  We'll look forward to following your return next year as seniors.

Katherine Johansen Davis Scholarship

In July of last year, Katherine Davis passed away after six decades of involvement at both the Cathedral and Christ the King School. In her honor, the Katherine Johansen Davis Scholarship was established at CKS and was awarded for the first time during the Catholic Schools Week Mass in January.  The scholarship was awarded to CKS 5th grader Kierra Williams, a student "who has used her talents and gifts to make Christ the King School more Christ-like."  Katherine's son Joe Davis (CKS '58) was on hand to present the award in honor of Katherine's many children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews who were and are such a big part of the CKS community.

GNG photoGNG True Blue Schools

On December 27, Christ the King School was presented with a check on the field at an Atlanta Falcons football game.  Georgia Natural Gas recognized the top five schools from their True Blue School's program.  As the fourth largest recipient of funds through this program, CKS was included in the honorees. With 126 participating parents and parishioners, CKS has received over $10,00 since the program's inception in 2009.

You can help, too!
If you are a GNG customer, all you need to do is go to GNG True Blue Schools, select Christ the King School and provide your account number.  For as long as you are a GNG customer, the school will receive $5 per month, at absolutely no cost to you.  It's as easy as that to donate $60 per year to CKS!

If you are not currently a GNG customer and want to participate in this program, just go to GNG True Blue Schools and select the option that says "I Want to Become a GNG Customer."  Once you have done that, select Christ the King School as your school of choice and follow the remaining instructions on how to become a GNG customer.  Christ the King School will then receive a $40 one-time donation plus $5 per month for as long as you are a customer.

As Georgians, most of us must pay for natural gas anyway - so why not purchase yours from a company that will support Christ the King School?  Please take the time to register today!  If you have any questions, contact Camille Naughton, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, at ccnaughton@christking.org.

Class Notes...

Patricia Montealegre Hoyos (CKS '75)

Class of 1975 Rep (and Super Sleuth) Michael Murray has been on a search to locate all of his former classmates, and has done amazingly well, with only 3 to go!  Locating Patricia may be his best find ever!  Here is Michael's story...

From looking at the St. Pius X Alumni Directory I knew at one time that Patricia Montealegre was living in Bogota, Colombia.  When I undertook this endeavor to try to gather all of our 8th grade class from Christ the King School -- I had one of my customers in Bogota mail a letter to the address on file at St. Pius to Patricia.  No luck.  No
response.  A couple of weeks ago I was visiting my customer in Bogota, Colombia and decided to take another look on the internet for Patricia and her name came up associated with a Catholic grade school.  I called the school and no one answered the phone -- they were still on vacation!   Well yesterday I tried the school again - by phone.  I introduced myself and they said, "Yes, you have the right Patricia Montealegre!"  However, Patricia was not in yesterday.  Darn it!   Just about 15 minutes ago I was able to speak with Patricia Montealegre - our classmate from Christ the King!  She is doing well, living in Bogota

with her three children - 25 years old to 10 years old!

Katie Baughman

Katie Baughman (CKS '95)

Katie (in the center with her Young Audiences of Atlanta trio) is hosting an Irish dancing workshop just in time for St. Patrick's Day.  The workshop is Sunday, March 13 in the Gym at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Buckhead.  The family class runs from 2-3pm and the adult class from 3:30-5pm.  The workshop is $10 with all proceeds benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Contact Katie at katiebaughman@gmail.com for more details.  When Katie's not dancing, she works at the Cathedral as a staff singer and assists with the children's choirs.

Margaret Mullins

Margaret Mullins (CKS '02)

Margaret (on the far right) is currently working at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.  She will be joining the Army Officer Candidate School, reporting for basic training in June at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, SC and then to Ft. Benning in Georgia this August.  Way to go, Margaret!

Alexa Thomas

Alexa Thomas (CKS '07)

Alexa (pictured with her parents & coaches) has committed to play tennis for the Lady Mocs of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. A senior at Pace Academy, Alexa is currently ranked #108 in the region and #32 in Georgia. She earned the Powerade Award for Fitness and Excellence at the Universal Tennis Academy & was Doubles Champion at the Papa John's Tennis Invitational in Augusta last fall.

Hot Mikado

Catherine Korizno (CKS '08), Jack Reigner (CKS '08), Henry Young (CKS '09)

Catherine, Jack and Henry are all members of the cast of the St. Pius X production of Hot Mikado on stage now!  The show runs March 9 - 12 at 7pm and March 13 at 2pm.  Tickets are available at the door.  Don't miss it!

Devon Dabney (CKS '09)

The accolades continue for Devon, now a sophomore at St. Pius.  In January, she was named one of five Female Youth Elite All-Americans by USA Triathlon.

deGolians - Ballet

Mary Helen (CKS '09) & Bill (CKS '64) deGolian

What could be better than father and daughter alums on stage together!  Mary Helen, a dancer with the Metropolitan Ballet, recruited parents to dance in the first act party scene of this year's production of  The Nutcracker.  Her first choice?  Of course, dear old dad...shown here with Mary Helen, fortunately in white tie and tails and not a tutu.

What's new?

Awards?  Achievements?  Job changes?  New babies? We want to know!  Keep us posted on you or your classmates. Send a note to CKSAlumni@christking.org  and we'll include it in our next issue.

In memoriam...

We are also saddened to announce the deaths of the following members of our Christ the King School community:

Dana Davis McGee (CKS '55)

Father, we come to you in the name of your son, Jesus.  We pray for the repose of the Dana's soul and the souls of all our departed alums.  May their families be comforted by your love and by their faith in you.  Give them the strength and support they need to endure the difficult days ahead.  May their souls, and the souls of all the faithful departed, rest in peace.
Amen.
