To understand all our desires, we must understand the root of desire. Whenever we want something or someone, it is because of only one reason, and that is attachment. We want to be with people we are attached to, and we want the objects to which we have become attached or addicted. A mother desires her child because of her great attachment to him. A heavy drinker desires alcohol due to his addiction to it. A chain smoker desires to smoke due to his addiction to cigarettes.
Going further, we see that we become attached to a person or object because of only one reason. It is because we fully believe that we will receive happiness from them. No one is born an alcoholic or a chain smoker. It is only due to repeated use of alcohol and cigarettes that he becomes attached to them. And he uses them repeatedly because he is fully convinced that smoking will relax him, make him look sophisticated, or benefit him in some other way. In other words, he believes he will become happy through cigarettes.
No one is born with attachments to any person either. A newborn has no attachment whatsoever. As he grows older, he becomes attached to parents and siblings because it is through these family members that he receives loving care and affection. This is why he becomes attached.
Two people become convinced that they will receive happiness from one another. As a result, they become very attached to each other. Because of attachment which has been formed, they desire to see one another, talk to each other and to be with one another.
First we start meditating on a person or object to be a source of happiness. Next, we form an attachment to the person or object. Attachment then leads to Desire.
