Annual Registration of Kansas City Rental Properties due Jan. 31

All owners of rental dwellings located in Kansas City, Mo., must renew or establish registration of their rental properties for 2014 with the City's Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department by Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Annual registration of rental properties is part of the Rental Registration and Inspection Program established by the City Council with passage of ordinance No. 071046 in October 2007.

Owners can register rental properties through Jan. 31 without incurring a registration fee. However, failure to register a rental dwelling before Feb. 1 will result in an administrative citation fine of $50. For each month (or portion thereof) that a rental dwelling is not registered, an additional $50 fee will be assessed. For example, a rental property not registered until August will be assessed a fine of $350. Registration is required on a calendar-year basis and expires each Nov. 30.

New Site Offers Comprehensive List of Formally Registered Home Inspectors

Because of the recent expiration of a law, home inspectors in Kansas no longer need to abide by certain regulations and reguirements, such as carrying certain types and amounts of liability insurance and annually completing a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education.

What you can do: To determine the qualifications of inspectors, REALTORSŽ and home buyers and sellers can check for inspectors' certifications with national organizations, such as the American Society of Home Inspectors or the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors.

The non-profit Kansas Association of Real Estate Inspectors has also now made available a website where you can search for home inspectors and view their qualifications and certifications.
