HMLS Fine Holiday Runs Jan. 6-13

HMLS is giving you a fine holiday to correct any missed status changes on property listings!

Beginning at 12:01 am on Monday, January 6 and ending on Monday, January 13 at 11:59 pm, you may update your HMLS property listings without any fines being generated for the late entry of new listings or the entry of status changes on your current listings. The reason for this holiday is to give you the opportunity to review all your listings and make sure everything is up-to-date, especially your listings where a sale has closed.

This fine holiday applies only to the entry of new listings and status changes and does not apply to non-compliant placement of wording, etc.

Mortgage Cancellation Tax Relief Update

According to REALTOR.org, NAR has been working with Congress since early in 2013 to extend the Mortgage Cancellation Tax Relief, a tax break that expired Dec. 31, 2013, and offered temporary relief to struggling borrowers when some portion of their mortgage debt was forgiven.

On Dec. 19, 2013, forty-two state and territorial attorneys general signed a letter to urge Congress to renew the tax relief law for another year.

On Dec. 31, 2013, the LA Times reported that "an extension of the mortgage forgiveness tax break could be passed retroactively, as was done last year."

Annual Registration of Kansas City Rental Properties due Jan. 31

All owners of rental dwellings located in Kansas City, Mo., must renew or establish registration of their rental properties for 2014 with the City's Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department by Friday, Jan. 31, 2014. Annual registration of rental properties is part of the Rental Registration and Inspection Program established by the City Council with passage of ordinance No. 071046 in October 2007.

Owners can register rental properties through Jan. 31 without incurring a registration fee. However, failure to register a rental dwelling before Feb. 1 will result in an administrative citation fine of $50. For each month (or portion thereof) that a rental dwelling is not registered, an additional $50 fee will be assessed. For example, a rental property not registered until August will be assessed a fine of $350. Registration is required on a calendar-year basis and expires each Nov. 30.

Online registration and more information are available at http://www.kcmo.org/nhs, or contact the Neighborhoods and Housing Services Department at 816-513-9010.
