Kansas City Billboard Registrations Due April 8

All owners of outdoor advertising signs located within the City of Kansas City, Mo., must follow a new amendment to the zoning code that requires these signs be registered with the City Planning and Development Department by April 8. There is no registration fee associated with this new rule, but outdoor sign owners who don't comply will face a penalty determined by the Municipal Court on a case- by-case basis. Online registration is available at www.kcmo.org/planning.

This requirement became part of the City's Zoning and Development Code on Dec. 13, 2012. The purpose is to help the City complete an inventory of outdoor advertising signs as well as address some ongoing maintenance issues. Outdoor advertising signs typically include billboards or any other sign that directs attention to a business, commodity, service, activity or product that is conducted, sold or offered off the premises from where the sign is located. There is no registration necessary for on-premise business signs.

Registration information for outdoor signs must include the size, height and type of sign, plus a photo of the sign and its supporting structure. An address, if available, or the geographic coordinates of the sign's location also must be provided. Any new outdoor signs must be registered within 30 days of installation.

For more information about the Outdoor Advertising Sign Registry requirements, see Sec. 88-445-14-B-8 at www.zoningplus.com/regs/kansascity or contact the Investigations Division of the City Planning and Development Department at 816-513-1500.
