Protect the Mortgage Interest Deduction

SB 84, the income-tax relief bill which rejects Kansas Governor Brownback's proposal to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, is under debate this week by the Kansas House. If SB 84 is rejected and the Governor successfully eliminates the mortgage interest deduction, the loss of the mortgage interest deduction would have a negative impact on the Kansas housing market and the Kansas economy, which could result in a significant drop in home values.

SB 84 includes a compromise proposal that will preserve the mortgage interest deduction. Itemized deductions would only be reduced in future years in proportion to any reductions in state income tax rates and as long as Kansas has an income tax, Kansans would continue to have the ability to claim the mortgage interest deduction.

The Kansas Association of REALTORS® Action Center asks that you take action by following this link, which will allow you to send a message to your state Representative or Representatives on this important issue.

YPN-KC Kickoff With KCRAR and MLS Boards of Directors

While the vernal equinox officially started around 6 a.m. this morning in Kansas City, a sort of spring fever began early for YPN-KC and KCRAR at their special YPN kickoff event on March 7 at the M & S Grill in Kansas City, Mo.

The event was an example of one of many exciting plans YPN-KC has for the year. On April 18, the group is planning the special self-defense course, "Defend Yourself" at Gold's Gym in Westport, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

A special YPN-KC event in the Freight House District in Kansas City, Mo. is also being planned for June 7, with

further details to be determined (stay tuned).

In exchange for the free April 18 self-defense class, which will teach self-defense techniques to men and women, donations of toiletries for the Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City, Mo. are encouraged (but not required).

The Rose Brooks Center is a domestic violence agency that offers women and children emergency shelter from life-threatening abuse. The center also offers prevention programming, crisis intervention, personal skills development, and other supportive services.
