Act Today to Protect the Mortgage Interest Deduction

Up for discussion next week by the Kansas Senate: HB 2059. This bill would single out Kansas as the first and only state in the nation to eliminate the ability of home owners to claim the mortgage interest deduction (MID) on their state income tax returns.

The Kansas Association of REALTORS reports that eliminating the mortgage interest deduction increases the tax burden by $162.5 million on over 344,000 Kansas home owners.

What can you do?

Say "yes" to the Masterson amendment, which will be offered during the debate to preserve the mortgage interest deduction by phasing out all itemized deductions (including the mortgage interest deduction) in future years in proportion to future reductions in state marginal income tax rates.
