Welcome to the New School Year

Monday, August 25 is the first day of school!  We start this school year with changes in staff, students and buildings.

We welcome new Superintendent, Dr. Talisa Dixon, new Administrative Principal of Heights High, Zoraba Ross, new principal of Gearity Professional Development School, Katrina Hicks, and 21 new teachers.

Three middle schools have been consolidated into 2 and work has begun to prepare the Wiley building and grounds to accommodate Heights High in the Fall of 2015.  At the Convocation Event held on Friday, August 22, Superintendent Dixon said this project is "on time and on budget."  Monticello and Roxboro Middle Schools now have additional parking spaces and many rooms have been upgraded to accommodate students from Wiley Middle School. The new Heights High Athletics Stadium will open on September 13 for the first home football game.

As we usher in the new school year and welcome new leadership and staff, know that Reaching Heights will remain constant in the work of providing the community opportunities to see, hear, and support the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Schools in meaningful ways.

Whole Foods & Good Deeds

On Thursday Sept. 18th, Whole Foods Market will be partnering with Reaching Heights! Several times a year, Whole Food Markets hold community-giving days when five percent of that day's net sales are donated to a local nonprofit or educational organization. Whole Foods Market on Cedar Road in University Heights selected Reaching Heights to benefit from their community giving day on Thursday September 18th. These funds will go directly to programs that support teaching and learning; music, the arts, and athletics; and community engagement.

If you have visited Whole Foods, then you know that it is more than just a grocery store, it's an experience.  Breathe deeply as you wander past the plants and bouquets of flowers into the fresh produce section and maybe stop for a fresh brewed cup of coffee.  Peruse the wine and beer sections and the amazing selection of fine cheeses.  Taste samples throughout the store as you check out the fresh meat and seafood, the prepared foods, and bakery.  Then, fill your cart to the brim with healthy, fresh foods to feed your family and support Reaching Heights!

Thank you GiveCamp!

Reaching Heights and  20 other area nonprofits were the benefactors of GiveCamp Cleveland 2014,  a weekend-long event where software developers, designers, database administrators,

The Reaching Heights website serves as a part-time staff member in our office. It represents our organization and communicates vital information about our programs, our schools, our community, and our donors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  A user-friendly, up-to-date website is vital to our success.

At GiveCamp, our amazing team of volunteers, Nicole McGuire  (PolyOne), Tina Hyde (Assurint), John Rummell (Control Alt Development), and Shannon Whalen (University of Akron) spent hours listening and learning about Reaching Heights. Over the course of the next 3 days, the Reaching Heights Staff and the GiveCamp team built the new website. It was an interesting, educational, inspiring, productive, and exhausting weekend. We have great memories, new friendships, useful skills, and most importantly a beautiful new website!

Thank you LeanDog, Inc. and Burke Lakefront Airport for hosting the event and the generous sponsors who provided the good food, t-shirts, photos, tables, chairs, technology resources and more.

Charter Schools Fail the Test of Justice

by Jan Resseger, Public Education Advocate and Vice President of Reaching Heights Board of Directors

Justice in education---the idea that schools distribute opportunity to all children---must be systemic. A public education system like ours in the United States---publicly funded, universally available, and accountable to the public---is the best way I know to balance the needs of each particular child with society's responsibility to protect the rights of all children. While there are some excellent charter schools, I believe the growing charter school movement threatens our system of public education.

Innovation Ohio reported that in FY 2012, school districts were slated to receive $6.3 billion to educate Ohio's 1.7 million students. "However, when deductions totaling $774 million for charter schools were removed (for the just over 108,000 children they enroll which is $7,166/student), traditional schools were left with $5.9 billion to educate the remaining 1.6 million ($3,687/student)." Many school districts lost more to charters than they received in state funding because of how the formulas work.
