Music Camp Finale Concert this Saturday, June 21

The first day of summer music camp is full of newness. A mix of anxiety and exhilaration. New places, new people, and challenging new music.

Today is the third day and it feels so different from the first day. Campers' shoulders are back and heads high as they confidently move from full orchestra to chamber groups, and then jazz, drumming, chorus or guitar.

Reaching Heights Summer Music Camp is well underway and the magic is happening. These young musicians know their way around the classrooms and onstage. Friendships are budding and the sounds of laughter and real music fill the hallways.

Each new camp day brings us closer to the culmination of more than 30 hours of intensive music study by 87 young musicians ages 10 to 14. The equivalent of a year's worth of weekly lessons in 6 days. Join us for the Finale Concert to feel the growth, admire the talent, and hear the amazing music!

Wiley Middle School, 2181 Miramar Blvd., University Hts., 44118, 10:30 am. Extra parking available in the Board of Education parking lot. Reception immediately following. No entrance fee. Donations accepted.

Transportation Department Appreciated

The Reaching Heights staff and several board members surprised the employees in the Transportation Department with special recognition on June 4. Each employee received a letter of appreciation, a Reaching Heights ceramic mug, and a handshake to personally thank them for their service to many students in our district.

The Reaching Heights Thank-A-Teacher program was established to recognize the many individuals who enrich the lives of our children and create a safe and positive learning environment.

There is still time to thank a teacher, coach, secretary, guidance counselor, security guard, custodian or any other person who helped enrich your child's education. Send us their full name, school, and your words of gratitude with a donation to Reaching Heights at our new address, 2843 Washington Blvd., Cleveland Hts,, 44118.  We will create a special thank you card and mail it directly to the person you thank.

Gearity Goes on Stone Lab Adventure
Reaching Heights Innovation In Education Grant Helps

More than 40 students from the Gearity Professional Development School in University Heights experienced an overnight learning adventure at the Ohio State University's Stone Laboratory on the Gibralter Island near Put-In-Bay in Lake Erie. Working as a team with OSU graduate students and marine biologists the students got to use college level equipment for hands-on exploration of water-systems.

Fourth grade teachers Joe Mendes and Maria Tayek along with Fiona Kuntz, Physical Education teacher, and Mary Thomas, Before and After Care Program Coordinator, and many parents accompanied the students. Reaching Heights 2014 Innovation in Education Grant Program awarded funds to support Gearity's Stone Lab Project.

Community-Wide Read is On the Same Page

Heights Libraries are at the heart of a community-wide reading collaborative set to kick off this Fall, called On the Same Page. The collaboration brings CH-UH schools, Reaching Heights, Heights Community Congress, Lake Erie Ink and Mac's Backs together around National Book Award Winning Author Sherman Alexie with his book, The Absolute True Diary of a Part-time Indian.

The program is designed to encourage personal connections and conversations about literature. This novel is written for youth but touches on many relevant themes for all ages like race, poverty, friendship and identity.

Pick up a copy at Mac's Backs or borrow one from the library and get ready to join the conversation and attend one of the events in the Fall.  For more information contact Heights Library at 216.932.3600.

Welcome Home New Neighbor  - Foodies -  June 26th

The first of the three Welcome Home New Neighbor events is scheduled for June 26th 6-8 pm at The Wine Spot. Reaching Heights, Future Heights and Heights Libraries will roll out the welcome wagon to neighbors who are new to Cleveland Heights and University Heights.

These events are designed to help new residents identify city resources and highlight local gems by bringing key leaders, city and school officials, businesses, cultural institutions and other organization together under one roof.

Each event will be thematically based to highlight some of the cities' jewels. June's Welcome Home features Foodies Jonathan Sawyer of The Greenhouse Tavern & Noodlecat, Tommy Fello of Tommy's and Keith Logan of Sweetie Fry.

The second Welcome Home event will be on October 5th. It will have a literary focus and feature local authors. If you know of a new neighbor, please share this information with them and have them RSVP at the Friends offices by calling 216.932.3600 x234 or visiting friends@heightslibrary.org.
