Happy New Year and Thank You From Reaching Heights! 

Thanks to all the volunteers, donors, and friends who made 2013 a great year in the life of Reaching Heights, our schools, and our community. We hope you can be part of some of the great events being planned for 2014. Here are just a few:

 

Tiger Nation Instrumental Music Festival Jan. 7

The second annual Tiger Nation Instrumental Music Festival on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 7 p.m., at Cleveland Heights High School, will feature band and orchestra students from all CH-UH schools, performing at the Heights High auditorium. The concert will include performances by a combined elementary orchestra; a District-wide 6th, 7th, and 8th grade combined band and orchestra ensemble; and four large Heights High School ensembles. Susie Kaeser, former Executive Director of Reaching Heights and current Administrator of the Heights Summer Music Camp, will serve as master of ceremonies. Tickets will be available for $2 at the door; box office open ats 6 p.m. You won't want to miss a grand finale number featuring 500 student instrumentalists, elementary through high school.

 

Registration for 10th Heights Summer Music Camp Opens Jan. 8

The 10th Annual Heights Summer Music Camp will fill the air with joyful noise June 16-21 at Wiley Middle School. Registration information will be available at the Tiger Nation Instrumental Music Festival on Jan. 7 (see above), and on the Reaching Heights website starting Jan. 8.

 

Bee Buzz Builds Toward Epic March 12 Clash of Spellers

The 23rd Annual Reaching Heights Spelling Bee will take flight Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at 7p.m., at the Cleveland Heights High School auditorium. Dinner for spellers will start at 6 p.m. Get your team organized today! Call 216.932.5110 for more information.

 

State of the Schools, Jan. 21

Superintendent Dr. Nylajean R. McDaniel will deliver the District's annual State of the Schools Address on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6 p.m. in the Cleveland Heights High School Social Room (13263 Cedar Road).  Instrumental music by 5ever, an ensemble of student performers, starts at 5:30 p.m. Superintendent McDaniel will recap events and achievements of the 2013 calendar year, discuss Ohio Report Card results and outline ways that CH-UH educators work to build on the District's progress. McDaniel will also discuss implications of passage of Bond Issue 81 to fund Phase 1 of the Schools Facilities Plan. Finally, the overall future of the District will be addressed. The CH-UH PTA will host the State of the Schools Address and provide refreshments.

 

Discussion of "Reign of Error," meets next on Jan. 22

The Cleveland Heights Teachers Union, in partnership with Reaching Heights and others, is promoting a community book discussion of "The Reign of Error," by Diane Ravitch, and wider issues in public education. Learn more at the CHTU website. Books are available for $16 at Mac's Backs or Appletree for $16. The group will next meet Wed., Jan. 22, 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, at the Heights High Social Room. Child care is available by calling CHTU at 216.321.0020.

 

Leadership Transition Coming at Reaching Heights

Reaching Heights Executive Director Patrick Mullen announced at last month's Annual Meeting that he will step down next Spring. Learn more about the transition here, and about the job opening here.
