2015 AMGA Guide Program Scholarships

The 2015 Scholarship Application Period is now open. Applications are due June 4th, 2014. Please contact Valerie if you have any questions regarding the scholarship application. Visit the site for more details. Also, if you'd like to volunteer on the scholarship committee this year, email Valerie. Congratulations to the 2014 scholarship recipients

Things to consider for 2015 scholarships:
  • These scholarships are ONLY for students going through the AMGA guide track programs. People interested in SPI scholarships can contact the SPI Providers to see if they offer scholarships for students.
  • You must be an Associate member to apply and you do not have to be enrolled in a program before applying.
  • Since students do not have to be enrolled in programs, this means that you MUST have fulfilled all pre-requisites for the program you're applying for, otherwise you will not receive the scholarship.
New Law for Guiding in Switzerland
As some of you may know, recently the official law for guiding in Switzerland came out. Switzerland has always been an IFMGA country, where guides must have their IFMGA certification in order to work there. They recently instated this law in a more official capacity and changed the insurance requirements, however, AMGA members should read this document to see the wording on guiding,"This means that mountain guide is a regulated profession in Switzerland, such as a doctor or a pharmacist." Perhaps one day, the US will have something similar in their law. Read more.

We are excited to welcome Jane Anderson to the AMGA Office Staff as the new Logistics Coordinator! She'll be responsible for communicating with students and instructors in regards to enrollment, logistics, staffing, course materials, and course feedback.

Jane comes to us from the Colorado Mountain School in Boulder, CO, where she served as the Expedition Manager. She enjoys the "behind the scenes" work that accompanies running programs and courses. As an active climber and skier she looks forward to sharing her passion for the mountains and the guiding profession through her work at the AMGA.

Climbing Instructor Program

SPI pic

Ben Traxler and Josh Beckner recently completed the Single Pitch Instructor Provider training process. Both Ben and Josh attended the SPI Provider Training back in November 2010. They invested a lot of time and energy getting up to speed with the course curriculum and delivery. It is great to be able to add these talented educators to the SPI Provider Pool.

Joe Lentini recently completed a CWI Provider Training with a group of candidates he described as among the most skilled he has had the pleasure of working with. Participants were Bev Wolfe, Brian Tannler, Bob Clarke, and Jeremy Robichaud. Special thanks go out to Chris O'Connell and the staff at the Boston Rock Gym for hosting the training.

Congratulation to the 18 individuals who passed their SPI assessment and the 14 who earned a CWI certification in March. For a list of those people click here.

Let's get social!

Who's wearing the new AMGA patches or t-shirts? We want to see them! Follow and tag us on instagram @amga1979 and we'll share your photo!

As always, if you have photos, stories, news, suggestions, comments, concerns, please send them to Valerie.

AMGA Blog
Guide Bulletin and The Guiding Life blog Editor, Lizzy Scully, is calling out to AMGA members for submissions for our blog and maybe even future Guide Bulletin issues. What we're looking for:
  • Photo essays with minimal words (for people who don't like to write much). These pieces should/could all be focused on the guiding life (their business, what they love/think about guiding, places they've been, etc).
  • Brief posts, even as short as 200 words. These could be simple reflections on the guiding life. Short is great!
  • And, of course, we welcome longer pieces by people who love to write!
Please email Lizzy if you have something to submit or suggestions.
