High Altitude Symposium with Dr. Peter Hackett, et al.

An exciting happening this year during the AMGA Annual Meeting is the High Altitude Symposium with Course Director, Dr. Peter Hackett. Other faculty includes: Dr. Alan Oram, Dr. Andrew Luks, Dr. Linda Keyes, Dr. Alison Sheets, and Dr. Peter Bartsch.

This course addresses the need for specialized education on high altitude illness, an objective hazard that, like avalanche hazard, deserves special attention. This is the first ever, advanced course in high-altitude medicine for those who need it the most.
A certificate will be distributed upon completion of this course.

The course fee is waived for AMGA members, so if you want to attend please send an e-mail to Valerie. **PRE-REGISTRATION for this symposium is REQUIRED. Please note that this course is being offered to the public, as well, so register early to guarantee yourself a spot.

For more information, please refer to the flyer on our website.

Patagonia Women's Scholarship Recipient - Solveig Waterfall
Patagonia is excited to announce Solveig Waterfall as the 2013 AMGA women's scholarship recipient.  This scholarship is funded by Patagonia in cooperation with the AMGA as an opportunity for a professional female guide to advance her guiding career. Solveig will receive full-tuition towards her Ski Mountaineering Guide Exam that was held in Valdez, AK in April 2013.

A few words from Solveig:

"I grew up at Alpental Ski Area in the PNW and began skiing before I even had a thought or say in the matter. Sharing my passion for soft snow, smooth skin tracks, and a fluid descent by committing myself to this industry for the last ten years has been an amazing adventure, and becoming a certified ski guide has been a goal I've been working towards attaining for the better part of that time.

I currently guide year-round for Rainier Mountaineering, Pro Guiding Service, Pacific Alpine Guides, and Chugach Powder Guides in both the Ski and Alpine Disciplines, as well as teaching AIARE courses.

Receiving the Patagonia Women's Scholarship has been a huge honor. I've had the good fortune, during my training, to be surrounded and schooled by an incredible group of world class guides, a few of which are inspiring female mentors who have helped to shape the course of my career and mold my character and presence in the field. Their encouragement, as well the gift of the Patagonia Women's Scholarship and it's support for the growth and promotion of women in this occupation have been instrumental to my success."
