Scholarship Season
BCA - Avalanche Jam

I hope you are enjoying the summer weather, getting out often and safely.  Lots of exciting things are coming up at the AMGA this fall; BOD elections, the Annual Meeting in Yosemite, the Avalanche Jam, and AMGA's new website - so keep looking out for updates.

On another note, we are sad to report the recent loss of a great climber and dear friend in our community, Peter Absolon. Our hearts go out to his wife, daughter, and all his friends and family.

NOLS Director Dies in Climbing Accident
pete absolon It is with a heavy heart that we report the tragic loss of Peter Absolon, the NOLS Rocky Mountain director and former AMGA board member.  Peter died Saturday, August. 10, 2007 in a rock-fall accident at the Leg Lake Cirque in the Wind River Range.  He was  climbing with a friend when he was struck by a rock that had been thrown by a group of hikers above. The hikers were unaware that there were climbers below. His partner remained unhurt.  It is our understanding that Pete was killed instantly.

"We are deeply sadden by this tragedy," said Bruce Palmer, acting ED for NOLS.  "Pete was a good friend and a key member of the NOLS community.  He had a great sense of humor and a quick and sometimes mischievous grin."

Pete was a passionate climber and will be dearly missed.

Services will be held in Lander Wyoming on Sunday, August 19: location to be determined.
Gear up for Scholarship Season

The AMGA is getting ready for scholarship season and this year we are doing it a little different.  We will have one general application with additional questions for specific scholarships.

We will be accepting applications November 1, 2007 through January 1, 2008.  Then, in the first week of January, all applications will be submitted to the AMGA scholarship committee. We plan on having all scholarships be awarded on March 3rd, 2008.

In regards to handling 2008 winter ski guide courses, scholarship applicants will be asked to pay upfront and then once awarded a scholarship, the AMGA will be happy to reimburse you.
So, if you are interested in applying for the various scholarships offered through the AMGA, please keep in mind that you will need to submit all required information by January 1, 2008!  Scholarship information, process and application will be available on our new website.  We'll let you know once it is up and running.
