You Died Too Young, Starr King

Sunday at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary

By The Reverend Dr. David Sammons, Interim Senior Minister

This past November the Masons celebrated the life of Thomas Starr King here at our church. Rev. King is the most famous of our past ministers. It's not exactly that they stole him. King was a Mason, and proud of it. And it is great the Masons are proud of him, too. But on this 150th Anniversary of his death it is time for our church to have a celebration of our own for a person not only important for his contribution to California and the Union, but to the church he loved here in San Francisco.

Joining the The Reverend Dr. David Sammons on the chancel is Worship Associate Christine Patch-Lindsay and Canvass Chair Howard Oringer. Ministering to us with music is organist Reiko Oda Lane and our church-choir-led music by director Dr. Mark Sumner.

Universal Secular Ethics?

Sunday, 6PM Humanist & Non-Theists Group, Fireside Room

Bob Burchfield, Humanists & Non-Theists Chair

In his book, "Beyond Religion, Ethics for a Whole World", the Dalai Lama observes that different regions of the world adhere to different religions that uphold different ethical systems.  In addition, an increasing number of people adhere to no religion at all.  He believes that as cultures interact in a world becoming more interconnected, an ethics common to all people will help bring about harmony.  The ethics he envisions will be secular in that it will not depend on any one religion's belief in divine revelation or other precepts, but will be derived from a scientific understanding of human nature and reason.

Jim Barnett will lead a discussion based on the Dalai Lama's ideas expressed in the book. Jim is a decades-long Unitarian Universalist, a member of the Humanist & Non-Theists Group,
Co-President of the Bay Area Humanists, and a student at the Humanist Institute.

We will start off with a potluck dinner at 6PM and the discussion begins at 6:30 PM.

Our planning committee meets at 5PM before the potluck. If you have suggestions for future events or just want to help with planning you are welcome to the planning meeting.

You are also invited  to join the Humanist & Non-Theists Group on Sunday, March 23 at 1PM in Chapel for a group reading and discussion of excerpts from John Dietrich's pulpit address, "How the Gods Were Made."  Sandwiches will be available for purchase.

All are welcome!

Dream Group Class

8 SESSION DREAM GROUP CLASS BEGINS MARCH 10 (THIS IS A NO FEE CLASS.)
DATES: MARCH 10 - APRIL 21
TIME: 6:30 PM -9PM

The Reverend Alyson Jacks, Minister of Family Life

Class minimum is 8, maximum is 10 and pre-registration required!

The Dream Group lead by Rev. Meg Whitaker-Greene is based in Rev. Dr. Jeremy Taylors's grounding principle that "
All dreams ultimately come in the service of health and wholeness."

Persons in the Dream Group will bring dreams or even tiny fragments of dreams to share. The participants will listen to each others dreams and project insights and ideas out of their own life experience, knowledge of mythology, and spiritual depth. Dreamers in the group will preface their insights as "if it were my dream, the 'cat in the hat' is about..."

The only person who truly knows the meaning of a dream is the dreamer. If the dreamer experiences an "aha" or "tingle" of recognition, the dreamer will have more consciousness of the layers of the dream. All of us in a dream group learn a great deal about our own lives from working with other people's dreams. We in the Unitarian Universalist Tradition have deep organizing principles for our lives. One of our principles is a search for truth. A search for truth is also a search for being as conscious as we can about our own life experiences and the experiences of others. Knowing the many levels of meaning in our dreams is one way of reaching for truth.

The Rev. Meg Whitaker-Greene, MFT graduated from Starr King School in 1978. She has served many Unitarian Universalist Congregations, including Minister of Chowbent Chapel in England. Meg has been a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist in California since 1979. She currently works as Clinical Supervisor of the Native American Health Center Family and Child Guidance Clinic in San Francisco. She is a graduate of the Marin Institute of Projective Dream Work. Her private practice includes Dream Work Groups. Meg is a member of the San Francisco UU Church.
