The Tricky Side of Love

Sunday at 11 am in the Church Sanctuary
By The Reverend Dr. David Sammons, Interim Senior Minister

Those who love don't always respect the worth and dignity of every person, as our Unitarian Universalist (UU) Principles ask us to do. It might be easier if everyone did treat us as people of worth and dignity, but not everyone does. Sometimes people do things that are horrible. So what do we do with our principle then? Say we want to "affirm and promote" the first principle as we're asked to do, should we only do so when we think a person is deserving? It's a question well worth asking, especially as a Unitarian Universalist President once said: "It all depends."

Joining The Reverend Dr. David Sammons on the chancel is Worship Associate Derek Czajka.

Ministering to us with music is our wonderful choir led by Dr. Mark Sumner and amazing organist Reiko Oda Lane

See you on Sunday!

Interim Senior Minister

Lively learning this week at Church!

Sunday, 9:45 AM Family Life Religious Education

The Rev. Alyson Jacks, Minister of Family Life

It's the second week of our theme-based classes. The OWL (K-1) examines how we keep our bodies healthy and safe. Team Timeless (2nd-3rd) continues with a lesson about "Jesus and the Law." They'll explore two stories from the Christian Bible: the story of harvesting of grains on the Sabbath and the story of paying taxes to the Romans and ask, "Are there situations when it's OK to step beyond the bounds of a law?"

Team Equal displays a new blessing (Sunday, February 2, 2014)

Team Bibleodeon (4th-5th) has the first of two lessons on King Solomon. This week, they investigate the importance of wisdom in leadership. Team Equal (6th-7th) takes up the Lord's Prayer and contemplates the many forms of prayer people practice, including the Prayer of Peace by St. Francis of Assisi. Our Coming-of-Age (8th-10th) youth continue their study of Unitarian Universalist Theology, and working on their autobiographies. YRUU (10th-11th) will meet for conversation and reflection.

Sensible Cinema

Friday, February 14, 6:30 PM Sensible Cinema, Murdock Room

Larry Danos, Sensible Cinema (Green Committee)

Should Black History Month be ended?  That's the question explored by filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilgham as he embarks on a nationwide campaign to do just that in the movie "More Than a Month".

The film takes the form of a road trip that begins in Washington DC and crisscrosses the country during February (Black History Month) 2010 and ends with an epilogue one year later.

"More Than a Month" is not just about an annual tradition, or history, or being Black in America.
It is about what it takes to be an American and to fight for one's rightful place in this nation.

Admission is free but donations are always appreciated. As usual, popcorn and other refreshments will be available.

Faithful Fools Street Ministry
Sister Carmen Barsody, Faithful Fools Street Ministry

Faithful Fools, an outreach ministry of this congregation, shares glimpses of our work in our e-newsletter and extends an invitation to anyone and everyone to participate.

We will be leading the 11AM Worship Service on Sunday, February 23 in the Sanctuary and invite you to don your finest hat and foolery and come join us. We also invite you to eat delicious soup at our Empty Bowls event after the Worship Service. We have many wonderful clay bowls made by potters in Minnesota and Nicaragua. You can buy your own special bowl, eat some wonderful soup and then take the bowl home. You can also pay for soup served in a compostable if you are just plain hungry but don't need a new bowl. All proceeds will go to support the work of Faithful Fools Street Ministry, an outreach ministry of this congregation located in the Tenderloin.
