KBA Is Bringing Al Tompkins Back

For the third year in a row Al Tompkins will present a workshop for TV news broadcasters, anchors, producers, reporters, videographers, editors and writers. All are invited to participate in this FREE event.

Below is the agenda for the Saturday, April 25th session which will be held in Lexington at the Hilton Downtown Lexington.

Agenda for session:

9:00-11:00

Write Tight

Your viewers won't allow you to waste their time. So you have to write tight, get to the point and tell me something I didn't know.

We will explore:

How to start a story and what goes where in the piece. The BEST is not ALWAYS at the top. How do you know?

What to do when you are working with boring video.

How to make characters more interesting.

How to write so you sound like Morgan Freeman (no kidding, it is not the voice, it is the order of the words in the sentence!)

11:00-11:15

Break

11:15-12:30

Jaw-Droppingly Cool Apps and Online Tools

You will learn the newest ways to go live from your phone on Twitter

You will see how to build an interactive image in less than 2 minutes

You will discover how to build a 360 interactive photo in less than 3 minutes

And so much more. This is stuff you can use on your next shift to find stories and sources and tell stories in new ways.

12:30-1:45

Lunch

Provided by the KBA.

1:45-3:45

The Skill of Critical Thinking

There is nothing more important to a journalist than the ability to think critically. We will use real cases to sort fact from fiction. You will learn to ask four questions to help you discover deeper ways to report your stories. We will examine many stories that should never have aired, but did, because the journalists didn't know what you will learn in this session.

Please reply to this email if you plan to attend. Be sure to include your name, station, and city!

Broadcasters Elected to Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame

Six new members will be inducted into the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame Thursday, April 16, at The Grand Reserve, 903 Manchester Street #190, in Lexington. The six will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a luncheon ceremony sponsored by the University of Kentucky School of Journalism and Telecommunications Alumni Association.

Broadcasters included in the 2015 Hall of Fame inductees are:
* Steve Burgin, investigative reporter and weekend anchor with WLKY in Louisville.
* Jeffrey Marks, president and general manager of WDBJ Television, Inc. in Roanoke, Virginia, previously with WHAS-TV and Radio.

A full list of inductees and bios can be found here:

The six new honorees will join 196 other journalists inducted into the Hall of Fame since its 1981 inception. Selection of honorees is made by a committee representing the state's media, the UK Journalism Alumni Association and the University of Kentucky. Nominees must be either Kentucky natives or outstanding journalists who have spent the bulk of their careers in the state.

Applications Now Open for 2015-16 KBA Barfield Scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for the Kentucky Broadcasters Association (KBA) Harry Barfield Scholarship program for the 2015-16 academic year. This is the 24th year of the program.

The application deadline is April 24, 2015.

Four scholarships of $2,500 apiece are available to students who are currently majoring in broadcasting or communications at a college or university in Kentucky. The  scholarships are awarded through a competitive application process which includes academic achievement, the recommendation of a faculty member, and extracurricular activities. Since the scholarship awards are renewable for a second year provided recipients continue to meet specified criteria, priority consideration will be given to students who are rising juniors.

"The KBA is proud to be able to help talented students pursue their higher education," said Gary White, president and CEO of KBA. "The KBA has awarded a total of more than $200,000 in scholarships since the inception of this program. Many of these recipients have gone on to successful careers in broadcasting and other related communications fields."

The program, now in its 24th consecutive year, is named in honor of Harry Barfield, the late president and chairman of WLEX-TV in Lexington.
