Happy Birthday WHOP!
Mike Tarter, KBA Director, announces WHOP is celebrating its 75th Birthday! On January 8, 2015 WHOP-AM in Hopkinsville will celebrate 75 years of service. The Lackey family, pioneers in the radio industry in Kentucky, signed-on WHOP-AM on January 8, 1940. It was the beginning of a 75 year relationship with the Hopkinsville and Christian County community. For the last 15 years WHOP has been under the guidance of the Forcht Group of Kentucky only the second ownership in the 75 year history of the stations, which is truly rare in the radio business. WHOP-FM joined the family of stations in 1948 and 95.3 signed-on in 2008. Today they comprise the only commercial stations broadcasting from studios in Hopkinsville. Since the beginning WHOP has provided the Hopkinsville area with news, sports, weather, information and entertainment. The Early Bird Show, which airs from 5-9am was started by the legendary Dink Embry in 1946 and continues to this day. WHOP has provided local high school sports play-by-play since 1940. In 1951 the Hopkinsville Rotary Club in conjunction with WHOP founded the "Rotary Radio Auction". Since then WHOP has broadcast every hour of the auction and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for student loans for local youth. Signing-on in 1940, WHOP was one of the earliest radio stations in Kentucky and was one of the original 10 Kentucky radio stations to form the Kentucky Broadcasters Association in 1945. In 75 years there have been only five general managers of WHOP including Katherine Peden who was one of the first women active in station management in the 1950's and Roger Jeffers who served as GM 41 years before retiring in 2005.
