More Than 2,000 Seniors Earn their SJUSD Diplomas 
The Class of 2015 Includes More Than 200 Seniors with the Seal of Biliteracy 
 
A new chapter begins for San José Unified School District's (SJUSD) recent graduates as they head off to college and pursue their higher education. More than 2,000 seniors recently participated in seven different graduation ceremonies obtaining their San José Unified high school diploma. Click here to meet the Class of 2015.

students are finishing high school on time; 
California's State Superintendent of Instruction announced this spring as part of the state's overall cohort 
graduation rate report. The report, measuring the cohort graduation rate across the state for the Class of 
2014, shows that San José Unified continues to do a good job at challenging its students towards earning their high school diploma, doing it on time, and preparing the graduates for a successful college career.

SJUSD's Progress - Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP)

San José Unified School District (SJUSD) thanks its parents, staff, students, and community members for their support and partnership in creating the update to the school district's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP). 

 

Following the most recent engagement sessions, the District has further refined the LCAP.  You can click here to find the current version on the school district's website. The LCAP will be presented to the Board of Education on June 25 for final approval. 

 

Community members and staff will have the opportunity to publicly comment on the plan in that meeting.

 


Canser Named 2015 Teacher of the Year

San José Unified named Mr. Jelani Canser of Burnett Middle as the 2015 Teacher of the Year. 
Mr. Canser teaches band and orchestra and is the school's International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator. He joined the Burnett Middle faculty in 2008.

The surprise announcement was made during a special event earlier this spring in which the school district recognized all of its local school teachers of the year. Click here for pictures of all San Jose Unified local school teachers of the year.

SJUSD Celebrates its Bus Drivers 

A special recognition event was held earlier this spring to honor the men and women who drive students safely to and from school every day.
San José Unified's 31 school bus drivers each received an Outstanding Bus Driver Award for the job they do every day. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Matthews and district leaders were on hand to show their appreciation.

San José Unified transportation professionals safely transport more than 1,800 students on 25 routes daily. 

Pioneer High Named a Gold Ribbon School

The California Department of Education recognized 
Pioneer High as a 2015 Gold Ribbon School. 

Pioneer High Principal Stefani Garino and 
SJUSD Board of Education President Sandra Engel both were on hand during the ceremony in late May as the school was recognized by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson. Learn more about how Pioneer High earned the distinction.

Pioneer High is San José Unified's latest school to earn a state or national distinction.

Washington Elementary Principal Honored at The White House

Washington Elementary Principal Maria Evans visited The White House this spring to join the Tech Museum of Innovation as the museum was recognized with a National Medal of Honor. The Washington Elementary principal was nominated by the museum as its community partner. During her visit, Ms. Evans presented a box of children's wishes to the First Lady.
