District Welcomes Interim Superintendent
Earlier this week, Richmond Public Schools welcomed Interim Superintendent Dr. Jonathan Lewis who was appointed to serve as the district's interim leader during a special Richmond City School Board meeting held on June 26. Dr. Lewis began his career in public education as an English teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School from 1979 to 1983. From there, he worked as both an assistant principal and principal at Armstrong High School from 1983 to 1989. A graduate of the University of Richmond, Dr. Lewis earned his master's degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and his doctorate from the College of William and Mary. He was named the Region II Superintendent of the Year in 2006, and was awarded a lifetime membership to the Virginia Council of PTAs. Learn more.

Major General Meredith W.B. "Bo" Temple
Major General Meredith Temple has dedicated much of his life to protecting and serving his country. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1971, Temple attended the Virginia Military Institute where he enrolled in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), a college-based program for training commissioned officers of the U. S. Armed Forces. His extensive career in the Army provided him the opportunity to lead military operations both at home and abroad. He served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm (1990-1991) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2004). He also managed a multi-billion dollar reconstruction program in Iraq and Afghanistan. Temple also led the development of the New Orleans flood risk reduction system in response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Temple culminated his Army career as Deputy and Acting Chief of Engineers/Deputy and Acting Commander General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 2012. Learn more about this outstanding RPS alumnus.

Lucille Brown Students Display Impressive Performance
Twenty-five Lucille Brown Middle School students received awards for their exceptional performance on the National Spanish Examinations (NSE), earning a total of three silver and four bronze medals, along with eighteen honorable mentions.
"Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious," said Kevin Cessna-Buscemi, National Director of NSE. "These exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 156,000 students participating in 2013."
The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
