Eating Disorders Unit Open

On October 1, Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences opened its doors to the new 12-bed Eating Disorders Unit for children and adolescents.  The unit has an interprofessional model of care that includes individual, family and group therapy, psycho-education, meal support, nutrition and eating rehabilitation and psychopharmacologic treatment.  This newly built unit that features individual patient bedrooms, kitchen, dining room and lounge area.  There are also group rooms and spaces for patient, family and group therapy.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Also on October 1, Ontario Shores opened its new Partial Hospitalization Program, a time-limited program for patients with serious and persistent mental illness.  This program is open to adults, aged 18 to 64 who require support as they transition from hospital to community or to avoid readmission.  The programming includes individual and group therapy, leisure and group activities, music and art therapy and metabolic monitoring.

Hope T-shirts

For those with a mental illness, words can hurt and be a barrier to recovery, but they can also inspire and give hope. Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences reached out to people living with mental illness, their families, our staff and the community to hear first-hand what words they felt inspired discovery, recovery and hope. The results were incorporated in this T-shirt design to carry their message forward and to create conversation and change the way we talk about mental illness.

Recovery Forum
Ontario Shores is hosting its 6th annual Mental Health Forum on October 23.  This year's theme is Becoming a Recovery Organization.  Registration is still open.  Read more about the great line up of speakers and registration details.

2014 Imagine Festival

The Imagine Festival kicked off Thursday, October 2 with an event in partnership with the Abilities Centre. Former professional US snowboarder Kevin Pearce presented his story of recovery to hundreds of students. Kevin, the subject of the award winning HBO documentary suffered a serious head injury while training for the Olympic Games and is now an inspirational survivor, sports commentator, motivational speaker and advocate for brain injury and Down Syndrome.
Ontario Shores also hosted movie screenings in our lecture theatre.

Mental Illness Awareness Month

October was officially declared as Mental Illness Awareness Month. Durham Regional Chairman Roger Anderson signed the proclamation at the request of Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences President and CEO Karim Mamdani, Durham Mental Health Services Executive Director Rob Adams and Canadian Mental Health Association CEO Linda Gallacher.
All three organizations highlighted a number of community events being held throughout the month providing educational opportunities and anti-stigma initiatives.

Interprofessional Grand Rounds
Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences invites you to attend Interprofessional Grand Rounds. The medical talks, intended for healthcare professionals, are scheduled Thursdays 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Ontario Shores lecture theatre.

Fourth Wednesday of each month
7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. 
Family Council Event
The Family Council hosts monthly meetings that are open to everyone in the community who have a loved one that has been affected by mental illness as well as family members, relatives, friends or significant others of current or former inpatients and outpatients of Ontario Shores.

Tuesday Evenings
6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. 
AA Open Discussion
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meets in the Conference Place every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm. Ontario Shores patients and the general public are welcome.
