Students Present Therapeutic Research in the Biotech Industry

On Saturday, September 21, at the CSU Channel Islands (CI) main campus in Camarillo, CI students, faculty, staff, community members, and biotech industry professionals gathered for the MS Biotechnology and MS Biotechnology/MBA Dual Degree 7th Annual Colloquium. Two industry-advised academic partnership groups were formed by degree, and those in either program with the stem cell emphasis, presented their own research at their internship site. These internship sites ranged from other universities to well-known biotech industry non-profit organizations.

The MS Biotechnology/MBA Dual Degree students presented their work with BAYERŽ Pharmaceuticals on exploiting the potential for therapeutic use on an area of the microbiome. The microbiome is an ecological and symbiotic environment within the human body which hasn't been fully recognized until recent years and is currently a hot topic in academia. This month the group will take their research to the bay area to present their results at a special session in front of Bayer executives.

Students in the MS Biotechnology program sought out to innovate therapies for gastric cancer and looked at competitive research and development activity around the hepatocyte and C-Met receptor family. This team worked with REMD Biotherapeutics, a biotech startup company in Camarillo.

14 Stem Cell Technology Laboratory Management (SCTLM) interns covered a wide range of topics concerning the therapeutic application of stem cell technologies. Student internships were held at the following institutions: City of Hope, Scripps Research Institute, University of Southern California, University of California San Diego, and University of California Santa Barbara.

The program for the event containing the names of all presenters and their advisors, as well as topics covered by the 14 SCTLM interns can be found here.
