Outrun Autism!
Dear Friends of Firefly,
One of our key strategic imperatives at Firefly is to "Serve the Underserved." There are hundreds of children and families living with Autism today that are unable to access quality services. Some experience financial barriers, some experience geographic barriers, and for others there are linguistic barriers. Firefly is on a mission to develop programs and/or partner with organizations to create an environment that opens the doors to children so that they can have access to services. This type of endeavor takes money.
In an effort to raise Money and Awareness for Autism and Firefly, I have agreed to accept a challenge that puts me well outside of my comfort zone. I am going to participate in a 3 Day Foot Race from December 29, 2013 - January 1, 2014. The race is intended to see just how far you can go. I thought it was very similar to the journey our children are on here at Firefly. Our goal is to raise $55,000 to support us in bringing services to underserved children and families. I am making a personal plea to all of you to consider a gift to support Firefly and send a vote of confidence as I become extremely uncomfortable. I'm not looking forward to the discomfort, sleeplessness and whatever else awaits me. However, this is only a 3 day journey for me . . . for our children living with Autism, it is a lifetime endeavor.

Can't to Can - Kiddo Accomplishments
- Tonight a client of mine did something I thought was incredible for any child: we had been talking about flood victim stories as I service the northern region and this is where he lives as well; his classmates, school, and parents' coworkers and work locations all affected by the flood. The client's home was surrounded but luckily not affected by flood waters... Anyways, during session he goes up to his room and brings back down ALL of the money he has and tells Mom he wants to donate it to a Longmont flood charity. This was so selfless and so generous of him, he did not save any of his money for himself and gave everything he had to donate to the flood relief. This coming from a client whose goals include perspective taking and expressing empathy, I was particularly touched, as was Mom.
- An Early Childhood kiddo who started out shy and unsure of this "costume idea" is now ready for Halloween. He embraces the fun in being able to change into character and giggle about these silly costumes we dress up in once a year! Tick-or-Treat!!
- One of our 15 year old kiddos had a successful grocery store excursion........He did not attempt elopement, waited for his peers and participated in the checkout. Grocery Shopping conquered...what else you got teachers!!!!!!
- Going on our third week attending this school, my Son (nonverbal) is making his mark..over the years, I 've worked with him one word at a time..well every day, he runs into the building with a smile on his face....now he said,"Go get into the car, and go to Firefly."...he's excited!! We travel one hour and a half back and forth each day.It is worth the trip! Thank you to everyone at FIREFLY AUTISM! You truly.....Understand ..

My View From Planet Autism By Julie Marshall
I say we now call it "awesome-ism," because our kids are so kind-hearted, they don't know how to be intentionally cruel; it's not in their DNA.

Time 4 Sibs - Sibshops
It is important to give siblings of individuals with special needs their own time to express how they feel and realize they are not alone. Sibshops not only provide support but are also information opportunities for brothers, sisters, and parents. Many siblings form lasting relationships with people they meet at Sibshops and we enjoy facilitating this support..
Our final Sibshop of the season is coming up on November 9th from 11am-2pm!
These are support workshops for sibs of children with special needs.
Please pass along this information to any families you think would benefit.
