Yes They Can - 10 Years of Change
Imagine being in Japan when your child was diagnosed with autism. For Nancy, who first realized something was different about her son Austin shortly after he learned to walk, the day she realized he had autism was the "worst day of her life." "As desperately as I wanted to believe differently, I knew in my heart that Austin's was a most severe case of autism and all our lives were going to be changed forever," said Nancy.
Austin was one of the first children to attend Firefly Autism, known as the Aspen Center for Autism at the time. At first Nancy wasn't sure what options would be available to her child. She even become a BCBA (board certified behavior analyst) believing that she would have to create Austin's education program herself. "Around that time, I met Diane Osaki and through her Craig Miller (Firefly's first president). Her powerful vision and absolute belief in children's potential, my commitment to Austin's education, the character of people of like Diane and Craig, and the great need for the Center - all these things coming together was nothing short of a miracle. Without thinking really, I threw my heart and my hope in with the start-up known as Aspen Center."
Austin attended Firefly for two years, beginning as a "fussy, frustrated little guy who didn't smile" into a child who smiles, laughs, uses a computer, goes to movies with his family and climbs 14ers. "Given his level of impairment, the development of his social nature was the single most transformative aspect of his time with the Firefly team...Although being able to talk is apparently not part of Austin's life plan, he has developed a fine repertoire of functional communication skills...None of these skills just 'developed' with maturation -all took the efforts of a dedicated team."
Nancy, who helped oversee operations at Firefly for seven years, says watching Firefly over the past 10 years is like "watching a dream unfold." Not only has she seen changes to the building itself but has also watched it grow dramatically from the 12 children it originally served. "To see that the commitment to training and treatment standards has been able to keep pace with explosive growth, that the magic of the Firefly bond is still strong for families and children and staff, and to know that families are able to use insurance - all these aspects are nothing short of miracles...I was in a unique position to see the inside of Firefly and to get firsthand insight into the hearts of the people who work there. Insofar as there is a magic place, Firefly is it."

Intensive Social Skills Spring Break Camp, March 25 - 29th
Firefly Autism is offering an intensive 5-day week of social skills camp for children with Autism from March 25-29. Structured similarly to a school day, we strive to provide a naturalistic setting for a high rate of social learning opportunities. These opportunities are embedded within activities that occur typically within a camp setting, such as music, arts and crafts, cooperative projects, outdoor games and technology driven activities. A large range of objectives are covered each day of camp including Body Language Skills, Play Skills, Conversational Skills, Perspective-Taking & Theory of Mind Skills.
We are dedicated to helping campers have fun while gaining confidence in their abilities to interact with peers and make friends within the camp, as well as outside of the camp setting. Click here to learn more about the camp as well as price and intake procedures. If you are interested in enrolling your child in one of our Intensive Social Skills Spring Break Camps, please contact Emily Roche at 303-759-1192 ext .12 or eroche@fireflyautism.org to discuss this process. This month on our Facebook page, we received a question about potty training a child with autism. Although toileting is an intensive process that varies from child to child, our teachers did suggest a couple of possible resources that may help some families struggling with this skill set:
* Steps to Independence: Teaching Everyday Skills to Children with Special Needs, Fourth Edition by Bruce L. Baker and Alan J. Brightman
* Self-Help Skills for People with Autism: A Systematic Teaching Approach by Stephen R. Anderson, Amy L. Jablonski, Vicki Madaus Knapp and Marcus L Thomeer
