Why We Do What We Do
Nancy Lewis's student, Bryan
The summer of 2011, I was thinking about changing my job. I just lost interest in the work I do as a sheet metal worker. I want to get into law enforcement and I know I need help on my reading and writing, so I talked to my friend Jessica and asked if she could tutor me. We worked for weeks and Jessica told me that she thought I might need more help. So she looked up some classes for me to take and she came across the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council. I called the Literacy Council and made an appointment to meet a tutor.
The end of the summer in 2012 I started meeting with my tutor, Nancy Lewis, for two nights a week. Nancy and I work through a workbook that has lessons in it. We also read one chapter a night in a fiction book that I have picked. After two mouths meeting up with Nancy, I was told by my boss that I had to go on a three month road trip to Connecticut. Talking with Nancy about it, she and I came up with a way for us to still work together. Every Tuesday and Thursday I would call Nancy on the phone. We would work for two hours on my workbook and then we would read a chapter. It was hard working on the phone, because sometimes we could not hear one other. Nancy and I made it work, though, and after the three months, I don't feel like I missed out.
After I got back from my road trip, Nancy and I started meeting at the library again. Ten months have gone by and I have finished two workbooks (Laubach 4 and Challenger 4) and read five fiction books. I'm so glad I made that first call to meet a tutor. I feel that I have made a lot of progress in the work I have done. I can see my new career approaching very soon. I owe it all to my tutor Nancy, she takes time from her life to meet up with me to teach me how to read and write better.
Nancy adds: "What Bryan's too modest to share with you is just how dedicated he is. This 32-year gets up at five most mornings to work out and then puts in a full day of work and additional hours as a shop steward for his union. In the past year he's sold his house, bought a new one, gotten engaged (and is getting married in six weeks!)-and still makes his tutoring sessions a priority. I have total respect for Bryan and helping such a nice guy is pure pleasure."

AACLC Presented With The Abilities Network Partnership Award
The Abilities Network presented AACLC with the Community and Employment Program Partners Award at their April 24th, 2013 Awards breakfast. According to Abilities Network Director Anisha Thompson "Each office is requested to acknowledge an organization, employer or business that has been supportive and beneficial to the individuals we support. As I was thinking of whom to recognize, I immediately thought of the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council, an organization that has helped many of our individuals build upon their reading skills and so many other attributes."
