Case Study

A $30M third-generation family owned manufacturing company has plans to grow to $50M within three years.

They realized that in order to take their company to the next level they needed to invest in leadership development.

As part of this initiative, they enlisted my assistance. The first phase of our project involved their Executive Management team of 28 members, including three owners.

Online Assessment and interpretation

Each team member completed an online assessment of his/her communication style and motivators (DISC and PIAV).

Their report highlights were professionally interpreted and reviewed in an executive debriefing session, and then included in an offsite leadership retreat.

Report highlights were included in a
leadership retreat

A few lessons learned:

  • Even the employees who were initially less engaged became significantly engaged in the process.
  • The level of self-awareness and awareness of others was raised dramatically.
  • Several members acknowledged during the retreat exercises that they learned new and relevant information about their peers and how they preferred to be communicated with.
  • That the newest employee, with a fresh and objective perspective, brings just as much value to the organization as the employee who has been there for 30 years.
  • A group wheel report reflecting each member's natural and adapted communication style revealed that several employees were adapting in one area to compensate for an underrepresented style within the organization.

Understanding communication styles is key to achieving goals

The takeaway

Overall, understanding team communication styles is expected to help them achieve their financial goals as well as increase individual job satisfaction. The project was very successful and received ratings of "Very High" Value from the executives and owners.

Women President's Organization

Record-Breaking Attendance at Annual Conference

More than 800 Business Women from all over the world gathered in Dallas for the Women President's Organization (WPO) Annual Conference.

I'm proud to be a WPO facilitator. It's a great peer advisory organization supporting women entrepreneurs and CEOs of multimillion dollar companies.

This year's annual conference was a huge success. One of the keynote speakers was Marshall Goldsmith, author of What Got You Here Won't Get You There. Marshall is a friend of WPO, and it was a pleasure getting to spend time with him.

What Got You Here Won't Get You There

I was inspired by several speakers:

  • Miora Forbes' interview with Barbara Barrett, President & CEO, Triple Creek Ranch. Barbara is fearless--a trained astronaut and the first woman to land an F18 on an aircraft carrier. Barbara takes an "exertive" vacation with a unique challenge every year.

  • Lynda Applegate, Sarofim-Rock Professor of Business Administration,

    Harvard Business School.

Lynda questioned why forecasting is so difficult and pointed out that when things are being disrupted, this represents a great opportunity to develop something new.

  • Dr. Johnetta Betch Cole, Director, Smithsonian National Museum of

African ArtA pioneering African American woman and a wonderful speaker who shared some of the lessons she has learned on her journey.

In addition to the great speakers, the highlights for me were the camaraderie and celebrating the success of women in business, including the awards for the 50 fastest-growing women-owned companies.
