Coppia's Year in Review 2012
Coppia's theme for 2012 was "create and relate."
So, just how did I do in relation to my theme? I'm pleased with my accomplishments and their alignment with my theme. Here are some highlights:
- Launched my online newsletter.
- Published articles in the Contra Costa Lawyer & Entreprenuer.com
- Completed Certification training as a licensed One Page Business PlanŽConsultant.
- Became a Consultant Facilitator with Women Presidents Organization (WPO), an organization for women presidents and CEOs of multimillion dollar companies.
- Facilitated workshops, including DISC Communication and "What's Working/What's Not."
- Enjoyed various speaking engagements including for the Society of Women Engineers, Mt. Diablo and Comerica Bank for their annual Women's Initiative event.
- Was appointed by Contra Costa County as a CASA volunteer to speak up for the best interests of a foster child in court.
- Helped raise awareness and money for the Avon Walk for a Breast Cancer Cure, by walking 39.3 miles.
- Started writing my first book for Couples in Business.
This has been a productive year filled with personal and professional growth, and I'm looking forward to our mutual success in 2013!

Client Corner
This month's client case study emphasizes the importance of proactive planning.
Client #1
When discussing possible circumstances that could impact my client's business in 2013, key issues were identified.
Her business partner is planning to take a one-year sabbatical, as she and her husband plan to adopt a baby.
The timing for the sabbatical and the transition plan have not been determined.
She discovered that if she didn't proactively start planning for her key partner's long-term absence, she and their company would be adversely affected.
She is currently developing a strategic transition plan, including cross-training and role reassignments.
Client #2
During the course of asking a client provocative questions regarding their business plan, they discovered that they had a previously unconsidered use for their product, which would generate an additional $100k in annual income.
What is the common theme between these two clients?
They both stopped working "in their businesses" briefly and started "working on their businesses."
Until then, both of them were running their businesses without a written plan. Simply put, the One Page Business PlanŽ writing process brought out their best thinking.

I encourage you to acknowledge the accomplishments you've made throughout the year and invite you to identify your "theme" for 2013.
It's easier than you think; and to help you kick-start your theme for 2013, I'm republishing my previous article, An Alternative to Goal-Setting that Takes Only 7 Seconds! May your "themes" come true!
Thank you for playing in the "sandbox of business and life" with me. I wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season and the very best for the coming year!
Holiday Greetings,
Allison

An Alternative to Goal-Setting
that Takes Only 7 Minutes!
May your "themes" come true!
Does the idea of goal-setting overwhelm you? If so, you might be interested in an effective alternative that will take you only seven seconds to do.
For some, setting goals can be challenging.
I'd like to share with you a great way to jump-start the process. Without over-thinking the question or getting into any of the details, simply ask yourself one question: "If I were to give this year a theme, mine would be the year of/to blank." (Fill in the blank with no more than a few words.)
What is your theme for 2013?
I borrowed this idea, which I've made a personal annual tradition, from my dear friend and colleague, MJ Ryan, author of several books, including Attitudes of Gratitude and Random Acts of Kindness.
As an example, I'll share my 2013 theme: "empowered momentum". It's that simple! The process of identifying a theme allows you to set the tone for what you'd like to accomplish during the year.
Once you've created a theme that feels true, go back and start to translate your theme into actual goals and action items.
Throughout the year, do a self-check
Ask yourself whether your actions are in alignment with your theme. I'm not suggesting that "theme-setting" should be considered a replacement for goal-setting. However, theme-setting can certainly be a great way to jump-start the goal-setting process.
A challenge to you: Identify a theme
I challenge you to take seven seconds right now and come up with your theme for 2013. Many of you will find that once you've created your theme, the process of goal-setting will flow more easily and enthusiastically.
I encourage you to share your theme with others, for added accountability. Feel free to share your theme with me. Wishing you all a great 2013 and may all your "themes" come true.

Colleague Corner: Tiffany Stuart, Dynamic Office & Accounting Solutions
More than six years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Tiffany Stuart, Owner of Dynamic Office & Accounting Solutions, when she was a speaker at the East Bay Women's Conference, and we've been collaborating ever since.
This year, Tiffany was honored as a three-time Stevie Award winner, including a Bronze Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year, both in Business Services and Consumer Services, and a Gold Stevie Award for Women Helping Women-Business Services.
Tiffany knows that finding the right staffing balance is key. "You don't want to hire too many employees and take on the excess financial burden associated with administering payroll and benefits; at the same time, you don't want to cripple productivity by being short-staffed."
Dynamic's staffing services include:
- Direct hire/full-time regular employees
- Temp-to-hire/working interview employees
- Technical contract employees
- Temporary employees
- Payroll and testing services
