Urban Update The monthly newsletter of the UMass Dartmouth Urban Initiative
|
October 2012
|
|
Like us, you're probably long on demands and short on time. But please take an extra minute to look at this month's 'Events' section, which features a few key opportunities for South Coast leaders in particular to get apprised of some major issues and opportunities in the areas of economic development, community development, and the arts.
Too often, events like these can be easy to miss (particularly if you're not on the right email list). So don't just keep the info for yourself; please do your part to enhance the capacity of our cities and our region by spreading the word. If there's ever an event you think we should feature, email urbaninitiative@umassd.edu. Thanks!

- Even if you haven't been following our work as evaluator for Taunton's HOPE VI project, you may be interested in reviewing the full baseline report (now live on our website). Why? It includes data and sources for everything from demographic and socioeconomic conditions to things like housing and business vacancy, and you can use those sources to track down the same data for your own city.

From the blog: |
- After fielding lots of inquiries on the matter, dedicated a post to sharing some of our favorite sources for newsletter content. The takeaway: Foundation Center is where it's at.
- In June, we shared with newsletter readers an opportunity for cities to compete for Bloomberg Philanthropies' Mayors Challenge. Fall River and New Bedford, along with ten other MA cities, now await the verdict on their innovative ideas.
- Grad assistant Jason Hill's first post reflects on a New Bedford project he admires for its ability to simultaneously address affordable housing and historic preservation.
