The Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative Team

The artwork in this holiday card is from the Dkae Mural Project. The project started at the beginning of October 2013, and continued for a month. Ten youth from the Southwest Network of the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative participated, meeting three times a week.

Local Graffiti Artist Mario "Dkae" James taught the youth the basics of the art style and served as a role model, sharing with them how he has been able to use his talent in beneficial ways. The project included brainstorming ideas, primering the boards, then actually applying the techniques they learned from the artist.

The goal of the project was to give youth a positive outlet for expressing themselves and to provide them with constructive activities for their out-of-school time. The youth want to donate the finished mural, which is on six vertical plywood panels, so that it can be put on display somewhere within the city.
