SYVPI Announces its 2013 Community Matching Grant Awardees 

 

Congratulations to our 2013 Community Matching Grant (CMG) Awardees! This year's  projects will provide a rich variety of academic, artistic, entrepreneurial and enrichment programming for youth to participate in this summer and into the fall. We are excited about the opportunities these projects will create for SYVPI youth and the delivery of important Developmental AssetsŪ that will support their healthy development into young adults. We would like to thank our dedicated and creative community partners in developing and implementing the projects.

 

Last night an engaging and interactive orientation was held with the CMG project leaders and SYVPI Neighborhood Network staff, our Developmental AssetsŪ trainer and staff from the CMG fiscal agency, Seattle Neighborhood Group. Below are brief descriptions of the twelve youth projects that will be carried out between June and November 2013. 

 

In the Central Network:

 

Coyote Workshops Fall 2013 (September 24 - November 7) 
Amount of CMG Award: $16,590
Twenty-four middle-school aged youth will participate in one of three cohorts to learn the basics of either cooking, furniture making or performance art/spoken word in workshops conducted by local professionals. Each cohort will give back to the community using the skills they have learned, for example, in preparing meals for a local homeless shelter for teens.  The project will culminate in a performance by the drama cohort and a community dinner prepared by the cooking cohort.

 

You Grow Girl! (Fall)
Amount of CMG Award: $9,310
Fifteen girls between 12 and 17 years of age will participate in sessions led by You Grow Girl! Teen Center staff and local professionals that combine traditional methods of advocacy-based counseling and mentoring with creative arts, such as art therapy, poetry, journal writing, role-playing, hip hop, break dancing, self-defense and music.

 

Youth Health Fitness Leadership and Advocacy Project (July 1 - August 24)

Amount of CMG Award: $20,000
Ten youth between 12 and 17 years of age will participate in workshops and activities that will increase their overall health and well-being. Additionally, the program will train youth to be community leaders and role models as they gain understanding of health and fitness, as well as provide them with the leadership and advocacy skills necessary to provide support

at Austin Foundation events. 

 

Madrona Summer Enrichment Academy (June - August)
Amount of CMG Award:$20,000

Twenty-six middle-school aged African American and East African youth will take part in experiential learning trips to colleges and universities, businesses and public parks and facilities. Students will develop skills such as career and college readiness, as well as participate in activities focusing on physical conditioning and water safety.  The project seeks to give youth of color greater access to academia, the arts, college athletics, the culinary arena and initiatives such as the Green movement.

 

In Southeast Network:

 
Bars Beats and Babies (September 24 - November 14
Amount of CMG Award:$18,000

Eight teenaged youth with infant children will create original music and learn about the music business, as well as gain valuable job readiness skills.  Youth will participate in workshops to learn about songwriting, music production and employment readiness, as well as hear from guest speakers who are professionals in the field.  At the end of the program, participants will have composed and recorded music that is ready for distribution and gained the knowledge and skills to help them secure employment.  Professional babysitting services will be provided to allow participants to attend the sessions.

 

Integrity Solutions Entrepreneurial Training (July - August)
Amount of CMG Award:$10,510

Ten youth between the ages of 14 and 17 will learn the fundamentals of starting a successful business.  Through the crafting of bath and body products, participants will learn how to organize and build a business.  Components of the project include industry research, marketing, sales, technology, legal documents and the relevance of culture and fitness.  The project will culminate in a community marketplace where the youth will earn income from the products they sell.

 

Prep for Success Summer Learning Program (June 24 - August 2)
Amount of CMG Award:$17,870

Twenty-two youth between 12 and 17 years of age who are underperforming in math or reading will participate in an interactive summer learning program designed to keep the youth academically engaged.  Participants will take part in academic, athletic and other enrichment activities that build confidence and promote family engagement. 

 

Find Your Way: Yoga, Live Music and Visual Arts (July 15 - August 24)
Amount of CMG Award: $15,615
Eight youth between 13 and 17 years of age will practice yoga, compose music, create visual art and give back to their community by assistant-teaching original yoga classes for young children, fellow teens, and elders. The project will culminate in an event in which participants share the art, music and photography they have created. 

 

Know2Grow (July 1 - November 16)
Amount of CMG Award: $18,350

Ten youth between the ages of 13 and 18 will participate in an academic success program that inspires youth to complete high school and enroll in higher education institutions. The program infuses practical life skills training and positive mindset around the importance of education in present day society through activities such as creating college or career action plans and participation in on-site college tours.

 

Stand Up and Be Heard (July 1 - August 9)
Amount of CMG Award: $6,234

Twelve middle-school youth will develop skills in communication and building relationships with authority figures. Participants will learn about communication and relationship principles and then apply skills they have learned through interactions with guests from agencies and organizations such as law enforcement, the prosecuting attorney's office and faith and community organizations, as well as through follow-up discussion with mentors.

 

Young Urban Authors Project (August 5 - November 20)
Amount of CMG Award: $18,135

Ten youth between 14 and 19 years of age will learn the process of creating a book from start to finish by experienced professionals, in the publishing industry. Participants will develop creative writing, editing, public speaking and marketing skills through workshops and fieldtrips to inspire their writing.  At the end of the project, books published by the youth will be celebrated at a book reading and signing events.

 

In Southwest Network:

 

Deal with Drama! (Summer)
Amount of CMG Award:$19,410

Twenty-four youth between the ages of 14 and 18 will participate in workshops on media literacy and drama to understand the impact of media on daily life and to tell their own life stories through performance art.  Participants will receive instruction in drama techniques, with an emphasis on improvisation, and working in groups, produce a short play revealing that similarities between groups are greater than the differences.


Youth Mayoral Candidate Forum on June 6 from 6 - 9 p.m.

All but one of the mayoral candidates have confirmed their attendance at this forum. The forum will be administered and moderated entirely by youth.  Additionally, the youth will be conducting a live poll and announcing their winning candidate at the end of the event.
