Greetings!

In this edition of the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI) eNewsletter you will find information about a March 6 public hearing on the possible expansion of SYVPI, Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll's visit to Olympia to promote "A Better Seattle"-- a campaign to build healthy communities and reduce youth violence, new SYVPI staff and more.

March 6 City Council committee public hearing

On Wednesday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m., the Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee will hold a public meeting to review and discuss whether or not to lift a budget proviso and expand the Initiative to allow enrollment of an additional 450 youth. The City Council imposed the $1.02 million budget proviso as part of the 2013 adopted budget. In order to lift the proviso, the City Auditor was required to develop an SYVPI logic model and evaluation strategy and SYVPI staff and research partners were required to provide a report on the SYVPI risk assessment tool. Those materials have been submitted to the Public Safety, Civil Rights and Technology Committee. Mayor Mike McGinn has also transmitted a proposed ordinance to lift the proviso. Materials considered by the committee will be posted up to 24 hours in advance of the meeting at the following location: http://www.seattle.gov/council/calendar/#/?i=1 (click on the link for agendas).

You may also wish to express your opinion by writing to your City Councilmembers.  Additional hearings may be held so stay tuned for more updates in special addition SYVPI eNewsletters or check the City Council calendar.

Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll visits lawmakers in Olympia

Yesterday, Head Coach Pete Carroll spoke with members of the State Legislature about his work with "A Better Seattle", a community awareness and mobilization campaign designed to reach at-risk youth.  He also met with Governor Jay Inslee.

Led by Coach Carroll, A Better Seattle is a joint-venture partnership between the Seahawks, the YMCA of Greater Seattle and SYVPI that serves as a unifying force to develop partnerships between corporations, law enforcement and community groups to build healthy communities and reduce youth violence.

Coach Carroll's visit to the legislature aimed to generate support for additional funding for A Better Seattle. He talked about the critical role of the YMCA, the leadership of the City of Seattle's Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, and of course, the steadfast commitment of our Street Outreach team in helping to reduce violence and increase opportunities for our youth.

Thank you Coach Carroll for your leadership, commitment and hard work on the issues of reducing youth violence and providing opportunities for our most vulnerable young people!  Below are links to three stories about Coach Carroll's visit to Olympia.

Please join us in welcoming new Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative (SYVPI) staff members Deborah Kuznitz and Eric Wilcox

Deborah Kuznitz comes to SYVPI as a full-time Sr. Grants & Contract Specialist. She has been employed with King County since 2008 where she most recently worked to implement housing and supportive services for families and veterans.  Prior to working for King County, Deborah worked in non-profit and community based organizations as a consultant and program manager. Deborah has broad experience in program and contract management in both the government and non-profit sectors. At SYVPI, Deborah will be responsible for managing the Initiative's partnering agency contracts and Community Matching Grants process.

Eric Wilcox has been hired with SYVPI as a Sr. Grants & Contract Administrator to fill a part-time, three-year grant-funded position. Commonly referred to as the Byrne Grant, SYVPI received the $978,461 grant in September 2012 from the Federal Bureau of Justice Assistance to implement non-arrest community-based interventions to address "hot spot" areas of juvenile violent crime in the Rainier Beach neighborhood. Eric has extensive experience in the government sector managing federal grants and contracts with non-profit and community-based organizations. Most recently he provided technical assistance to Small and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises for a Sound Transit design contract. Prior to that, Eric worked for King County as a Community Development Block Grant Program Planner. At SYVPI, Eric will be responsible for managing the contracts and federal reporting requirements associated with the Byrne Grant.

Deborah and Eric started their new duties on February 19.  Both bring the skills and knowledge needed to implement the expanding work of SYVPI. We are lucky and excited to have them on board! Welcome Deborah and Eric!
