We celebrate Presidents Day on Monday, February 18, 2013.
While the thought of a 3 day weekend tends to get us a little more excited than presidential politics these days, we wanted to explore the rich heritage our leaders had when it came to the great outdoors.
The landscape of our national history is littered with men who seized their moment and served our country with pride and impacted the world as we know it.
This is our small attempt to say thanks. Thanks to the men who served as President of the United States. Agree with their political affiliation or not, we are who we are because of the shoulders that we stand on. Men of vision, men of integrity, men who rose to the occasion that was before them. |

| George Washington | Known as the Father of our Country, George Washington captures the spirit of The American Spirit. Born in 1732, our first President was a major in the militia that fought against the French for England. After the war, he sought to be named as an officer in the British Army...But was turned down. He left the militia and returned to Mount Vernon, his family home, married his wife Martha and briefly embraced the task of running the plantation. George Washington was well known for keeping up with the latest scientific advances in farming, operating a lucrative fish farm, and being an expert horseman.
Some folks may not know this, but the picture above showing Washington braving the weather to launch a surprise attack across the Delaware River, actually stopped to get in a bit of fishing before continuing on that day. The fishing poles are there, just not recognizable.
Obviously, George Washington went on to lead the revolution war effort and was recognized as one of our greatest leaders and was the only President to be unanimously elected by the electoral college. |

George was known as an avid fisherman. In the pic above, is an actual tackle box he carried with him at all times. The small piece of bait carried in the kit is actually the first attempt at Scent Fusion, which TomBob Outdoors has recently perfected. Just kiddin. Fishing did take up a great deal of time after his political career. He kept various journals of his fishing exploits. He even took time out for a fishing trip while he and the other leaders hammered out the forming documents of our government. He was ready to fish anytime, anywhere. Along with being an avid fisherman, The Father of our Country was a well known and very skilled distiller. Said of his closest aides, "He was an enthusiastic consumer of his own creation." Sounds to me like George was the kinda guy that spent time on a creek bank with a cool drink watching a fishing line and pondering the pleasures of life.
We like the fact that while George Washington was a politician, led the Continental Army as General, worked a plantation, grew tobacco, and even did some shinin... He was a man of the outdoors. Hunter, fisherman, horseman, and all around patriot. He was a patriot before that word was cool.
George Washington was an extraordinary man who showed extraordinary leadership in the infancy of our country. He led our armies, and the beginning stages of our government and we appreciate him for it.
