This past Thursday students commemorated Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

A healthy debate exists about when and how to introduce children to the subject of the Holocaust. Some maintain that children should learn this material uncensored; others contend that the Holocaust should not even be mentioned during elementary school.

MJCDS follows a third educational approach of "preliminary" education that will prepare children to encounter the Holocaust more fully in middle and high school. In the context of Yom Hashoah, students at MJCDS focus on 1) learning how Jews commemorate sad events and loss, and 2) exploring relevant themes that will be helpful to them as a basis for future learning on this topic.

This week, younger students focused on the theme of candles as a way Jews mark both happy and sad times. On Yom HaShoah at the end of tefillot, we lit a special memorial candle and sang Esa Einai as a means of marking this day and this very, very sad time in history.

Older students learned about Raoul Wallenberg and other righteous non-Jews who bravely risked their lives to save Jews. Our oldest students in grades four and five read and discussed The Feather Bed Journey.

Shabbat Shalom,

This week students at all grade levels began their state reports!  Students are currently researching their chosen states and are learning how to organize the information as they prepare for our upcoming State Fair.   Morah Jessie works with Boaz and Lincoln.

Morah Aviva, Isaac and Juliette conduct research .

On Friday, Morah Aviva and Jackson Hetue, who built our classroom greenhouses, planted new seeds with the K-1 class.  Students in grades 2-5 were excited to take home the plants they planted during the winter. Now there is room in the greenhouses for our newest plants, which were planted today in egg cartons.

Tikkun Leil Shavuot
Saturday, May 23, 7:30 pm

Join area rabbis and other teachers from across Madison's Jewish community for a traditional Tikkun Leil Shavuot - an evening of learning, beginning at 7:30 pm and continuing well past midnight. This year's theme is:

Building - Dwelling - Shelter - Home, Livnot U'Lehibanot: To Build and Be Built. What makes a house a home? What structures help us to live a meaningful life? How do actual spaces shape sacred experiences? What values form the foundations of Jewish living? Join us as we explore Biblical, Rabbinic and modern texts to better understand how both actual and metaphorical spaces help us to experience the sacred and live with intention.

Feel free to come for all or part of this lively celebration of Judaism's love of study and learning. This program is presented by Beth Israel Center in partnership with Congregation Shaarei Shamayim.
