The Maggid:  The Weekly Newsletter of MJCDS

Put mini-marshmallows on the arms of your dining room ceiling fan and turn it on when it's time to represent the plague of hail.

This was the wackiest (most creative?) suggestion I read this week about how to get the most out of your Passover seder, avoiding rote recitations in favor of a lively and kid-friendly experience. There are many resources on the web to help you to do this. You can find some ideas here and here.

Keep in mind: the goal here is for each of us to go beyond merely telling the story of the Exodus. We must internalize it. Using the language of the Mishnah found in our haggadot, in every generation we are obligated to see ourselves as though we personally were brought out of Egypt.

Our older students are studying this particular section of the Haggadah and are wrestling with its demand that we empathize with the oppressed---and that we then act in a way that demonstrates this personal understanding of suffering. If we can bring that idea to each of our seder tables, we can truly say dayenu!

Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Rebecca

Students in the K-1 class are working on art filled haggadot to use at their seders this year. Here, Heshy uses different colors to represent the plagues (a la Jackson Pollack).  Below, Lincoln's draft of a Roy Lichtenstein-style piece showing a scene from the Exodus story.

This week our friends from Gan HaYeled visited MJCDS to play and learn about Passover. Thanks to Tina, Jerri ,Rachel and all of the Gan parents who made this morning possible!  Below, Jojo reads to a guest; students sing their own lyrics to "There's a dinosaur knocking at my door and he wants to have a seder with me!"

Jojo shows different ways to represent fractions and percentages.
